Red Sox reinstate right-handed pitcher Michael Wacha from 15-day injured list

Club options left-handed pitcher Darwinzon Hernandez to Triple-A Worcester

BOSTON, MA — The Boston Red Sox today reinstated right-handed pitcher Michael Wacha from the 15-Day Injured List. To make room for Wacha on the active roster, the club optioned left-handed pitcher Darwinzon Hernandez to Triple-A Worcester following last night’s game.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Wacha, 31, will start tonight’s game against the New York Yankees. The right-hander was placed on the 15-Day Injured List on July 8 with right shoulder inflammation, retroactive to July 5. He posted a 2.00 ERA (2 ER/9.0 IP) in two rehab starts, tossing the first 4.2 innings of Worcester’s combined no-hitter on August 4 and allowing two runs in 4.1 innings for Double-A Portland on August 9. Wacha is 6-1 with a 2.69 ERA (21 ER/70.1 IP) in 13 starts for Boston this season, leading Red Sox pitchers in ERA (min. 50.0 IP).

Hernandez, 25, last pitched Wednesday against the Atlanta Braves, allowing two runs in the seventh inning. The left-hander has made seven relief appearances for Boston this season, surrendering 16 earned runs in 6.2 innings. Hernandez has a 4.68 ERA (13 ER/25.0 IP) in 14 outings (seven starts) for Worcester in 2022.
