Club Options Left-Handed Pitcher Brandon Walter to Triple-A Worcester
BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today reinstated left-handed pitcher Chris Sale from the 60-Day Injured List. To make room for Sale, the club optioned left-handed pitcher Brandon Walter to Triple-A Worcester following last night’s game against the Kansas City Royals. The Red Sox’ 40-man roster is now at 40.

Sale, 34, was placed on the Injured List on June 2 with left shoulder inflammation. The left-hander is 5-2 with a 4.58 ERA (30 ER/59.0 IP) and 71 strikeouts in 11 starts for Boston this season, including 4-0 with a 2.24 ERA (9 ER/36.0 IP) in his last six. He tossed 6.1 scoreless innings with four hits, two walks, and 10 strikeouts across two rehab starts for Worcester on August 1 and August 6 against Syracuse. Acquired by Boston from the Chicago White Sox on December 6, 2016, Sale is 119-77 with a 3.08 ERA (370 ER/1,737.0 IP) in 334 career games (254 starts) with the White Sox (2010-16) and Red Sox (2017-23).
Walter, 26, has posted a 3.07 ERA (5 ER/14.2 IP) in six games for Boston this season, his first Major League experience. The left-hander has also recorded a 5.74 ERA (44 ER/69.0 IP) in 16 games (13 starts) with Worcester. Ranked as the one of the Red Sox’ top 10 pitching prospects by Baseball America (No.4) and MLB.com (No. 7), the Delaware native was selected by Boston in the 26th round of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft.
