Club Designates Infielder Christian Arroyo for Assignment

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today recalled infielder Luis Urías from Triple-A Worcester. To make room for Urías, the club designated infielder Christian Arroyo for assignment. The Red Sox’ 40-man roster is now at 39.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Urías, 26, was acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday, in exchange for minor league right-handed pitcher Bradley Blalock. The right-handed hitter has played in 20 games for Milwaukee this season, going 8-for-55 while making 10 starts at third base and seven at second base. He has also batted .233 (27-for-116) with five doubles and four home runs in 29 games for Triple-A Nashville in 2023. Originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by the San Diego Padres on December 27, 2013, the Mexico native has batted .235 (311-for-1,323) in 413 career games with the Padres (2018-19) and Brewers (2020-23).

Arroyo, 28, has played in 66 games for Boston this season, batting .241 (47-for-195) with a career-high-tying 16 doubles while appearing in 62 games at second base, four at third base, and four at shortstop. The right-handed hitter has batted .264 (182-for-689) with 18 home runs and 93 RBI in 224 games for the Red Sox since being claimed off waivers from Cleveland on August 13, 2020. Originally selected by the San Francisco Giants in the first round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft out of Hernando High School (FL), the Florida native has played in 295 Major League games with San Francisco (2017), Tampa Bay (2018-19), Cleveland (2020), and Boston (2020-23).
