Boston Recalls Left-Handed Pitcher Darwinzon Hernandez from Triple-A Worcester
BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox today placed right-handed pitcher Josh Winckowski on the COVID-19 Related Injured List. To fill Winckowski’s spot on the active roster, the club recalled left-handed pitcher Darwinzon Hernandez from Triple-A Worcester.
Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.
Winckowski, 24, started last night’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays, receiving the loss after allowing three runs in 6.0 innings. The right-hander is 3-4 with a 4.38 ERA (18 ER/37.0 IP) in seven starts this season, the first appearances of his Major League career.
Hernandez, 25, has not allowed a run in four relief appearances for Worcester in July, striking out six batters in 3.1 innings. The left-handed pitcher has posted a 3.66 ERA (32 ER/78.2 IP) in 84 career Major League outings (one start), holding left-handed hitters to a .151 batting average and .576 OPS. From 2019-21, the Venezuela native ranked fourth in the American League with 14.19 strikeouts per 9.0 innings (min. 75.0 IP).
