Red Sox claim right-handed pitcher Zack Weiss off waivers from Los Angeles Angels

Boston Transfers Right-Handed Pitcher Corey Kluber to 60-Day Injured List

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today claimed right-handed pitcher Zack Weiss off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels and optioned him to Triple-A Worcester. To make room on the 40-man roster, the club transferred right-handed pitcher Corey Kluber to the 60-Day Injured List.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Weiss, 31, has allowed three runs with seven strikeouts over 5.1 innings in six games for the Angels this season. The right-hander has also pitched in 30 games for Triple-A Salt Lake, posting a 6.03 ERA (25 ER/37.1 IP) with 50 strikeouts. Originally selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the sixth round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft, the California native owns a 5.79 ERA (12 ER/18.2 IP) in 19 career Major League games with the Reds (2018) and Angels (2022-23).

Kluber, 37, was placed on the 15-Day Injured List on June 21 with right shoulder inflammation. The right-hander has gone 3-6 with a 7.04 ERA (43 ER/55.0 IP) in 15 games (nine starts) with the Red Sox this season, making each of his last six appearances in relief. Selected by the San Diego Padres in the fourth round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, the two-time American League Cy Young Award recipient has gone 116-77 with a 3.44 ERA (627 ER/1,641.2 IP) in 271 career games (260 starts) with the Cleveland Guardians (2011-19), Texas Rangers (2020), New York Yankees (2021), Tampa Bay Rays (2022), and Red Sox (2023).
