Club Designates Outfielder Abraham Almonte for Assignment
BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox yesterday claimed catcher Caleb Hamilton off waivers from the Minnesota Twins. To make room for Hamilton on the 40-man roster, the club designated outfielder Abraham Almonte for assignment.
Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.
Hamilton, 27, made his Major League debut with Minnesota in 2022, playing in 22 games while making three starts at catcher and one at first base. The right-handed hitter spent the majority of this season with Triple-A St. Paul, batting .233 (48-for-206) with 10 doubles, 11 home runs, and 43 RBI in 62 games. Selected by Minnesota in the 23rd round of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft out of Oregon State University, Hamilton has batted .213 (323-for-1,517) with 132 extra-base hits and 215 RBI in 467 career minor league games. The Washington native has appeared at all nine defensive positions during his minor league career, making his lone pitching appearance in relief in addition to making 221 starts at catcher, 104 at third base, 39 at first base, 19 in left field, 13 in center field, 10 at second base, six in right field, and two at shortstop.
Almonte, 33, hit .257 (9-for-35) in 15 games with Boston, making four starts in center field, two in left field, and one in right field. The switch-hitter also batted .291 (32-for-110) with a 1.005 OPS in 32 games for Triple-A Worcester. He was acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers on July 25 and selected to the Major League roster on September 7. Almonte has appeared in in 455 Major League games with the Seattle Mariners (2013-14), San Diego Padres (2014-15, 2020), Cleveland Indians (2015-17), Kansas City Royals (2018), Arizona Diamondbacks (2019), Atlanta Braves (2021), and Boston (2022).
