Red Sox announce roster moves

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today announced the following roster moves:

  • Recalled left-handed pitcher Darwinzon Hernandez.
  • Reinstated first baseman Eric Hosmer from the 10-Day Injured List.
  • Optioned right-handed pitcher Josh Winckowski following yesterday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays.
  • Placed outfielder Rob Refsnyder on the 10-Day Injured List due to low back spasms.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Hernandez, 25, has made seven appearances over two stints with the Red Sox this season, most recently August 10 against the Atlanta Braves. The left-hander also posted a 5.73 ERA and 13.90 strikeouts per 9.0 innings (33.0 IP, 21 ER, 51 SO) over 23 outings with Triple-A Worcester. The Venezuela native owns a 5.06 ERA and 14.03 strikeouts per 9.0 innings over 91 career major league appearances (85.1 IP, 48 ER, 133 SO).

Hosmer, 32, was placed on the 10-Day Injured List due to low back inflammation on August 23, retroactive to August 21. The left-handed hitter has made 12 starts at first base for Boston since being acquired from the San Diego Padres on August 2, batting .225 (9-for-40) with six runs, three doubles, and four RBI.

Winckowski, 24, made his first career relief appearance Saturday in Toronto, allowing three runs over 3.0 innings. The right-hander is 5-7 with a 5.89 ERA (46 ER/70.1 IP) in 15 appearances across five stints with Boston this season, his Major League debut. Winckowski also made 13 appearances (12 starts) for Worcester this season, going 2-4 with a 3.82 ERA (26 ER/61.1 IP).

Refsnyder, 31, has hit .307 (47-for-153) over 57 games with the Red Sox this season, posting career highs in hits (47), doubles (11), home runs (6), and RBI (21). Among American League players with at least 50 plate appearances against left-handed pitchers, the right-handed hitter ranks fourth in batting average (.359) and seventh in OPS (1.005).
