Red Sox announce roster moves

BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox today announced the following roster moves:

  • Reinstated right-handed pitchers Nathan Eovaldi and Garrett Whitlock from the 15-Day Injured List.
  • Optioned right-handed pitcher Phillips Valdez to Triple-A Worcester.
  • Placed left-handed pitcher Matt Strahm on the 15-Day Injured List with a left wrist contusion, retroactive to July 13.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Eovaldi, 32, is 4-2 with a 3.16 ERA (24 ER/68.1 IP), 72 strikeouts, 10 walks, and a .244 opponent batting average in 12 starts for the Red Sox this season. Placed on the Injured List with low back inflammation on June 12 (retroactive to June 9), he made one rehab start for Worcester, allowing two runs in 3.0 innings on July 10. The right-hander has not allowed a run over his last 15.0 Major League innings.

Whitlock, 26, has made nine starts and four relief appearances for Boston this season, going 2-1 with a 3.51 ERA (19 ER/48.2 IP). In 59 Major League outings—all with the Red Sox—he is 10-5 with a 2.58 ERA (35 ER/122.0 IP), 130 strikeouts, and 28 walks. Placed on the Injured List with right hip inflammation on June 10 (retroactive to June 9), the right-hander allowed two runs in 4.0 innings over two rehab appearances, July 8 with Worcester and July 12 with Double-A Portland.

Valdez, 30, has posted a 4.41 ERA (8 ER/16.1 IP) in 13 appearances for Boston this season. The right-hander has not allowed an earned run over his last three Major League outings (4.0 IP), including a scoreless, hitless eighth inning Wednesday against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Strahm, 30, has made 33 appearances for Boston this season, posting a 3.58 ERA (11 ER/27.2 IP) and .248 opponent batting average. The left-hander most recently pitched Tuesday at Tampa Bay, allowing a pair of inherited runners to score before he was removed from the game due to injury.
