Red Sox announce roster moves

BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox today announced the following roster moves:

  • Appointed right-handed pitcher Josh Winckowski as the club’s 27th man for today’s doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles.
  • Placed right-handed pitcher Hansel Robles on the 15-day Injured List retroactive to May 25 due to back spasms.
  • Recalled right-handed pitchers Ryan Brasier and Phillips Valdez from Triple-A Worcester.
  • Optioned right-handed pitcher Hirokazu Sawamura to Worcester.

Winckowski, 23, is scheduled to make his major league debut tonight, starting Game 2 of today’s doubleheader. Ranked by Baseball America as the Red Sox’ No. 12 prospect, and No. 6 pitching prospect, the right-hander is 1-1 with a 3.13 ERA (11 ER/31.2 IP) and 0.85 WHIP in seven starts for Triple-A Worcester this season. He made one relief appearance for Boston during Spring Training, tossing a scoreless inning in relief on March 20 against Baltimore. Acquired by the Red Sox as part of a three-team trade in February 2021, Winckowski grew up in Fort Myers, FL, home of the Red Sox’ Spring Training site.

Robles, 31, last appeared on Sunday against the Seattle Mariners, allowing one run in 1.2 innings. The right-hander has posted a 2.65 ERA (5 ER/17.0 IP) in 16 appearances this season and is tied for the team lead with two saves.

Brasier, 34, has made 18 relief appearances for Boston this season, posting a 6.28 ERA (10 ER/14.1 IP). The right-hander has also made two scoreless appearances for Worcester this season, most recently tossing a perfect seventh inning in the WooSox’ game last night at Lehigh Valley.

Valdez, 30, has made eight relief appearances for Boston this season, with six of them being scoreless while posting a 6.10 ERA (7 ER/10.1 IP). The right-hander has also made six appearances for Worcester in 2022, posting a 1.17 ERA (1 ER/7.2 IP).

Sawamura, 34, owns a 3.60 ERA (6 ER/15.0 IP) in 18 relief appearances for Boston this season. The right-hander appeared in last night’s game against Baltimore, allowing one run in the ninth inning.
