Rangers recall LHP John King from Round Rock, place RHP Spencer Howard on 15-day injured list

King will be available in bullpen for Wednesday night’s game in Houston

Houston, Texas — The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has recalled left-handed pitcher John King from Triple-A Round Rock. Additionally, right-handed pitcher Spencer Howard has been placed on the 15-day Injured List, retroactive to August 8, with right shoulder impingement.

King will be seeking his first action with the Rangers since July 5 at Baltimore, as his first stint with the club ran from Opening Day-July 5. He has gone 1-3 with a 4.60 ERA (16 ER/31.1 IP) over 29 relief appearances for Texas this season, and his 29 appearances still rank 8th on the staff despite spending a month at Triple-A. He was optioned to Round Rock on July 6 and has gone 0-1 over 10 relief outings, allowing 11 runs/earned runs in 11.0 innings. The Houston-area native and University of Houston product last pitched for the Express on Sunday at Sugar Land.

Howard has a 2-4 record with a 7.41 ERA over 10 games/8 starts spanning two stints with the Rangers this season: Opening Day-April 29 and July 5-current. He took the loss in his last outing with Texas, taking the loss in a start on Sunday vs. Chicago-AL (3.1 IP, 6 R-5 ER). Howard has also produced a 3-2 record with a 3.69 ERA over 10 games/starts with Round Rock this season. The first date he would be eligible to return is August 23.

Following today’s transactions, the Rangers remain at the 40-man limit on the club’s Major League roster, along with two players (Mitch Garver and Eli White) on the 60-day Injured List.
