Ornelas will be in his second stint with Texas in 2023
Arlington, Texas — The Texas Rangers announced prior to Saturday night’s home game against the Oakland Athletics that the club has recalled infielder Jonathan Ornelas from Triple-A Round Rock. To make room for Ornelas on the active 28-man roster, the team has optioned outfielder J.P. Martínez to Round Rock.
The 23-year-old Ornelas will be in his second stint with the Rangers this season. He was also with the club from August 7-13, appearing in 2 games as a reserve with no plate appearances and one run scored in his first MLB action. He made his Major League debut on August 7 at Oakland as a pinch-runner, scoring the go-ahead run in the 8th inning of the Rangers’ 5-3 victory that night. Ornelas has spent the balance of the season at Triple-A Round Rock, batting .250/.364/.359/.723 (103-412) with 8 home runs and 50 RBI over 108 contests. He has reached safely in 17 of 20 games since he was optioned back to Round Rock on August 14, posting a .250/.380/.408/.788 slash line with 3 home runs, 11 RBI, and 18 runs scored.
Martínez batted .225 (9-40) with one home run and 4 RBI over 17 games with Texas in his first career Major League action after having his contract selected from Round Rock on August 11. The Cuba native has combined to bat .311/.435/.558/.993 with 12 home runs and 56 RBI for the Rangers’ top three minor league affiliates this season.
Following today’s transactions, the Rangers remain at the 40-man limit on the club’s Major League roster, along with three players (Jacob deGrom, Brett Martin, and Jake Odorizzi) on the 60-day Injured List.
