MLS Preview: San Jose Earthquakes (0-1-0) at Columbus Crew SC (1-0-0)

The Earthquakes are unbeaten in seven straight home matches against Columbus (W4 D3) dating back to a 3-0 loss in August 2009. The seven-game run is San Jose’s longest active home unbeaten run against any single opponent.

The Earthquakes opened their season with a defeat for the third time in the last four seasons. San Jose has lost two straight to start the campaign only once since 2009, beginning the 2019 season with four straight losses.

Columbus has won four straight matches dating back to the end of last season. The only five-match winning streak (including playoffs) the Crew have had since 2010 was the five consecutive matches they won culminating with a victory in the 2020 MLS Cup Final.

Javier López scored San Jose’s only goal in their season opener against the Red Bulls on a header. It was the first time López has scored on a header in his league career in MLS and Liga MX (29th goal).

It took Miguel Berry just eight minutes to score the opening goal in the Crew’s 4-0 win over Vancouver on Saturday. That tied the fastest opening goal of a season in Crew history with Edson Buddle, who scored in the eighth minute in the Crew’s season opener against the Galaxy in 2005.
