MLS Preview: Philadelphia Union (7-1-8) at Chicago Fire (3-8-5)

The Union have lost only one of their last eight matches against the Fire (W5 D2) going back to the start of the 2018 season. The last two meetings between the sides have ended in draws after Philadelphia won five of the previous six meetings.

The Fire lost for the eighth time in their last 11 games after a 2-0 defeat at Houston on Saturday (W1 D2). Since the start of April, Chicago has collected just six points and won just one match, both fewest in MLS in that time.

The Union extended their unbeaten streak to nine games with a 2-1 win over New York City on Sunday (W2 D7). Including playoffs, this is the longest unbeaten run in the club’s MLS history, though they did record a 10-match regular season unbeaten run spanning the 2021 and 2022 seasons.

Xherdan Shaqiri missed Saturday’s defeat to Houston, the fourth match he’s missed for Chicago this season. The Fire have scored a total of one goal in the four games without Shaqiri this season.

The Union’s winning goal at 95:24 on Sunday was the latest match-winning goal in regulation in the club’s MLS history. Philadelphia has scored just one later goal in MLS play (excluding extra time), a Brenden Aaronson goal at 96:00 in a 3-0 win over Inter Miami in September 2020.
