MLS Preview: New York City FC (8-3-3) at Philadelphia Union (6-1-8)

The Union recorded a 2-0 away win against NYCFC on March 19 in the first meeting between the sides this season. Philadelphia has never won consecutive matches against New York City FC in MLS, losing three times and drawing twice following its first five wins in the rivalry.

The Union’s 1-1 draw with FC Cincinnati was the seventh time in their last eight MLS matches that they’ve split the points. Only one team in MLS history, the Galaxy in April-May 2009, has drawn eight times in a nine-match span.

New York City is unbeaten in nine straight games (W7 D2) while the Union are unbeaten in eight (W1 D7). This will be the sixth meeting in MLS history between two teams on unbeaten runs of at least eight games and the first since the Galaxy and Fire met in July 2011.

The Union are one of four teams yet to allow a goal from outside the box this season (Crew, Fire LAFC). Philadelphia hasn’t allowed a goal from outside the box since November 2020 against the Crew, not allowing an opponent to score from outside the area in its 54 MLS games since (incl. playoffs).

New York City FC’s nine straight matches unbeaten (W7 D2) equals the second-longest streak in the club’s MLS history. NYCFC went 12 straight games without losing from April to July 2019 (W7 D5).
