MLS Preview: Atlanta United FC (1-1-0) at Charlotte FC (0-2-0)

Atlanta United is winless in its last five matches against expansion sides (D2 L3) dating back to September 2020. The Five Stripes had won five of their first seven matches against MLS newcomers, including against Minnesota in both team’s first MLS season in 2017.

Atlanta United is unbeaten in eight straight home matches (W6 D2) dating back to September, its longest home unbeaten run since an 11-match streak in April-August 2019. They’ve allowed more than one goal just twice in their last 14 MLS matches at Mercedes Benz Stadium (10 total goals conceded).

Charlotte FC is the seventh expansion side to lose their first two matches in MLS, but the first to do so without scoring since Toronto in 2007. The Reds in 2007 and Inter Miami in 2020 are the only two expansion sides to lose their first three MLS contests.

Josef Martínez has managed just two shots in his first two games of the new season, hitting the target just once. This is the first time Martínez has failed to score in his first two starts of a season.

While 2022 is Charlotte’s first MLS season, two Charlotte players found the net against Atlanta in the 2021 MLS campaign. Yordy Reyna scored against Atlanta with D.C. United on August 21 and Daniel Ríos did so for Nashville just seven days later.
