The Pirates have recalled RHP Roansy Contreras from Triple-A Indianapolis and have placed RHP Duane Underwood, Jr. on the 10-day injured list, retro to 4/8 (right hamstring strain).
Contreras, 22, is ranked by Baseball America as the No. 80 prospect in MLB and No. 4 in the Pirates system.
Contreras made his Major League debut last season on September 29 and tossed 3.0 scoreless innings against the Cubs at PNC Park, walking one and striking out four.
The Pirates acquired Contreras from the Yankees on 1/24/21, along with pitcher Miguel Yajure, outfielder Canaan Smith-Njigba and infielder Maikol Escotto, in exchange for Jameson Taillon.
In 13 starts with Double-A Altoona and Triple-A Indianapolis last season, Contreras posted a 2.64 ERA, striking out 82 batters and walking 13 in 58.0 innings of work.
Contreras will be wearing uniform #59.
