The Pittsburgh Pirates today claimed right-handed pitcher Adonis Medina off waivers from the Philadelphia Phillies.
Medina made his Major League debut in 2020 after entering the season rated by Baseball America as Philadelphia’s fifth-best prospect.
The 25-year-old Medina spent a majority of the 2021 campaign with Triple-A Lehigh Valley, where he went 4-5 with a 5.05 ERA (67.2ip/38er) and 55 strikeouts in 17 starts. He also had two separate stints with the Phillies last season on August 14 and again from September 11 through the remainder of the season, where he went 0-0 with a 3.52 ERA (7.2ip/3er) in four appearances (one start).
During the 2018 season, Medina was named to the All-Star Futures Game played at Nationals Park while finishing third in the Florida State League in strikeouts (123) and tied for fourth in wins (10).
Medina, who was signed by the Phillies as a non-drafted free agent on May 29, 2014, has gone 35-33 with one save, a 3.78 ERA (540.2ip/227er) and 484 strikeouts in 117 appearances (104 starts) during his minor league career.
A corresponding 40-man roster move will be announced at a later time.
