Pirates announce roster move

First baseman Alfonso Rivas, who was one of three players acquired from San Diego on Tuesday, has been added to the 26-man active roster.

Infielder Nick Gonzales has been optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis to make room for Rivas on the active roster.

Rivas will wear uniform No. 6.

The 26-year-old Rivas played in eight games this season with San Diego but spent most of the year with Triple-A El Paso, where he hit .332 (69-for-208) with 19 doubles, three triples, nine home runs, 40 RBI, .462 OBP, .582 slugging percentage and 1.044 OPS in 58 games.

Since breaking into the big leagues in 2021 with the Cubs, Rivas has been charged with just one error in 712 total chances in 718.1 innings (105 games) at first base.

Rivas has also six accumulated six Defensive Runs Saved as a first baseman since the beginning of last season. The only three first basemen in MLB to record more in that time are Christian Walker (19), Carlos Santana (11) and Matt Olson (9).
