The Pittsburgh Pirates today acquired infielder Jhonny Severino from the Milwaukee Brewers organization in exchange for first baseman/designated hitter Carlos Santana.Â
The 18-year-old Severino was rated by MLB Pipeline as the No. 21 prospect in the 2022 international draft class. MLB Pipeline also rated Severino as a 55 grade for both his power and arm at the time Milwaukee signed him as part of the organization’s 2022 international draft class.Â
The right-handed hitting Severino spent the 2023 campaign with the Arizona Complex League Brewers, hitting .385 (10-for-26) with two doubles, a triple, four home runs and 10 RBI in his first six games. At the time he was acquired by the Pirates organization, he was hitting .250 (12-for-48) with two doubles, a triple, four home runs and 10 RBI in 12 games while making six appearances (six starts) at third base and four appearances (four starts) at shortstop.Â
During his first professional season in 2022, the 6’2’’ Severino hit .268 (48-for-179) with 11 doubles, one triple, three home runs and a team-leading 25 RBI in 48 games while playing in the Dominican Summer League.
