Phillies reinstate Alvarado from 15-Day IL; option Brogdon to Lehigh Valley

Prior to tonight’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Phillies recalled left-handed pitcher José Alvarado from his rehab assignment with Double-A Reading and reinstated him from the 15-day injured list (left elbow inflammation). To make room for Alvarado on the 26-man roster, right-handed pitcher Connor Brogdon was optioned to triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Phillies President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski made the announcement.

Alvarado, 28, made two rehab appearances (2.0 IP) between Lehigh Valley and Reading. Prior to his stint on the IL, he converted five of his seven save opportunities with Philadelphia, while 12 of his 14 appearances were scoreless. From Sept. 13, 2022-April 18, 2023, Alvarado struck out multiple batters in 14 straight games (34 SO total), a club record for most consecutive relief appearances with multiple strikeouts. Since his last walk on Sept. 21, 2022, he has faced 71 batters and has struck out 36 of them (50.7%).

Originally signed by the Tampa Bay Rays as an amateur free agent on March 13, 2012, Alvarado was acquired by the Phillies in a three-team trade with the Dodgers on Dec. 29, 2020.

This season, Brogdon’s 28.1 innings pitched ranked second among Phillies relievers (Andrew Vasquez, 28.2 IP) while his 27 total appearances (one start) were tied for second on the club. Eighteen of those appearances were scoreless.

Brogdon, 28, was selected by the Phillies in the 10th round of the 2017 MLB Draft.
