Prior to tonight’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Phillies recalled right-handed pitcher Luis Ortiz from triple-A Lehigh Valley. To make room for Ortiz on the 26-man roster, right-handed pitcher Yunior Marte was optioned to Lehigh Valley.

Phillies President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski made the announcement.

Ortiz, 27, posted a 2.70 ERA (3 ER, 10.0 IP) across eight relief appearances for the Phillies in his first stint in the majors in 2023 from April 16-May 6.  He had 10 strikeouts to three walks and permitted only two extra-base hits, both doubles, to the 42 batters he faced (.316 SLG).

Originally selected in the 1st round (30th overall) of the 2014 MLB Draft by the Texas Rangers, Ortiz, a California native, was claimed off waivers by the Phillies from the San Francisco Giants on Nov. 9, 2022.

Marte, 28, made the Phillies Opening Day roster and over his four stints with the club in 2023, made 15 relief appearances. The Dominican Republic native worked in last night’s game against the Diamondbacks and saw his season-best 8.0-inning scoreless streak snapped in the 9-8 loss.

Originally signed by the Kansas City Royals as an amateur free agent on July 19, 2012, Marte was acquired from the Giants by the Phillies in exchange for left-handed pitcher Erik Miller on Jan. 8, 2023.
