Phillies add Luis Ortiz as additional player for today’s doubleheader

The Phillies have added right-handed pitcher Luis Ortiz from triple-A Lehigh Valley as the additional player for today’s doubleheader against the Washington Nationals.

Phillies President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski made the announcement.

Ortiz, 27, has gone 3-0 with three saves and a 4.25 ERA (14 ER, 29.2 IP), eight walks and 34 strikeouts in 23 games (1 start) for the IronPigs this season. Each of his last four appearances have been scoreless (4.0 IP) and he has recorded five strikeouts with no walks issued in that span. Over his three stints with the Phillies this season, the California native has posted a 3.86 ERA (6 ER, 14.0 IP) with five walks and 12 strikeouts in 10 games. He last appeared for Philadelphia in the second game of the club’s doubleheader against the San Diego Padres on July 15.

Originally selected in the first round (30th overall) of the 2014 MLB Draft by the Texas Rangers, Ortiz was claimed off waivers by the Phillies from the San Francisco Giants on Nov. 9, 2022.
