The Phillies have acquired right-handed starter Noah Syndergaard from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for outfielders Mickey Moniak and Jadiel Sánchez, Phillies President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski announced today.
Syndergaard, 29, made 15 starts for the Angels this year and posted a 3.83 ERA (34 ER, 80.0 IP) with 64 strikeouts to only 22 walks. He has faced 338 batters this season and limited them to a .244/.300/.383 slash line while posting a 1.21 WHIP (75 H). He has thrown at least 5.0 innings and allowed three earned runs or fewer in 10 of his 15 starts this year.
Syndergaard has thrown 326 sinkers this year and opponents are hitting just .179 with a .211 slugging percentage and .222 wOBA against it. Among 78 pitchers in MLB this year who have thrown at least 300 sinkers, Syndergaard’s .211 opponents slugging percentage and .222 opponents wOBA rank first.
A veteran of seven major league seasons, Syndergaard has a 3.37 career ERA (299 ER, 798.0 IP) and has pitched for the New York Mets (2015-19; 21) and Angels (2022). Among all active pitchers with at least 700.0 innings pitched since 2015, Syndergaard’s 3.37 ERA ranks 10th behind Jacob deGrom (2.47), Clayton Kershaw (2.51), Max Scherzer (2.71), Justin Verlander (2.82), Gerrit Cole (3.16), Chris Sale (3.21), Corey Kluber (3.22), Rich Hill (3.25) and Zack Greinke (3.29). In his career, Syndergaard has limited opponents to a .665 OPS, which ranks 13th among active pitchers in the same span, trailing Aaron Nola (.662 OPS) for 12th place.
In 53 career starts and exactly 300.0 innings against the National League East, Syndergaard is 18-14 with a 3.30 ERA (110 ER) with 321 strikeouts, 71 walks and a .669 opponents OPS. In five career postseason games (four starts), Syndergaard is 2-1 with a 2.42 ERA (7 ER, 26.0 IP). Originally selected in the first round (38th overall) of the 2010 MLB draft by the Toronto Blue Jays, Syndergaard was traded to the Mets on December 17, 2012. He was selected as a 2016 National League All-Star.
Moniak was originally selected first overall by the Phillies in the 2016 MLB draft. He appeared in 47 games for the Phillies over parts of three seasons (2020-22). Sánchez was selected by the Phillies in the 12th round of the 2019 MLB draft and posted a .725 OPS in 39 games this season between the rookie-level Florida Complex League Phillies and single-A Clearwater.
