The Phillies have acquired right-handed pitcher Erich Uelmen from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for cash considerations, President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski announced today.
The 26-year-old appeared in 25 games with the Cubs in 2022, finishing eight of them. He posted a 4.67 ERA, including a 2.84 mark in 23 of his 25 appearances during his first major league season. Right-handed hitters batted just .210 against him in 71 plate appearances.
A fourth-round selection by Chicago in the 2017 MLB Draft, Uelmen made 56 relief appearances and 48 starts in their minor league system, posting a 4.33 ERA. Last season was the first since 2017 in which he was used exclusively as a reliever.
To make room for Uelmen on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Vinny Nittoli was designated for assignment.
