NWSL Preview: San Diego Wave FC (6-5-2) at Chicago Red Stars (3-9-1)

SeatGeek Stadium | Bridgeview, Illinois – Saturday, July 1 at 8:00 PM ET

Players to watch:

Chicago midfielder Cari Roccaro scored her first goal with the Red Stars against Gotham, with teammate Sarah Griffith notching the assist. Seven of Chicago’s last eight goals have been assisted after just two of their first seven goals this season (excluding own goals) had assists.

In San Diego’s last league match, forward Jaedyn Shaw notched the seventh goal of her NWSL career and fourth of the season. The goal came in the 47th minute, marking the first time Shaw had scored in the second half of an NWSL match.

Match facts: The Chicago Red Stars welcome San Diego Wave FC to the outskirts of the Windy City on Saturday, with Chicago looking to avoid a fourth-straight loss in league play while San Diego aims to avoid a third-straight loss in the regular season as well. The Red Stars are currently at the bottom of the table in 12thplace with just 10 points from 13 games played, while San Diego has fallen to 6th place after a bump in the road as of late.

The Red Stars have lost nine of their last 11 games in all competitions (W2) including each of their last four matches. Chicago’s most recent loss was a 2-1 defeat to Gotham, the team’s 13th time allowing multiple goals in a match in 2023, which is the most of any NWSL team.

The Wave are unbeaten in their last four road matches in league play (W3 D1), delivering clean sheets in each match. San Diego is the third team in NWSL history to allow zero goals over four straight regular season matches (2021 Courage, 2019 Reign) with no team having done so in five straight.

San Diego has won all four of its all-time meetings with Chicago including a 1-0 win last July in its lone visit to face the Red Stars. All four of those victories came by exactly one goal for the Wave.
