NWSL Preview: NJ/NY Gotham FC (6-6-3) at San Diego Wave FC (7-4-4)

Snapdragon Stadium | San Diego, California – Saturday, August 19 at 10:00 PM ET

Players to watch:

The last time Gotham FC visited San Diego on May 7, 2022, forward Alex Morgan became the third player in league history to score four goals in a match (K. Hamilton 2019, S. Kerr 2017). Morgan has scored 10 career goals against Gotham, only finding the net more often against the Washington Spirit (11 times).

Gotham forward Midge Purce has recorded assists in each of her last three games, the first player in club history to record an assist in three straight matches in all competitions. Only one player, Steph Catley for Portland in 2014, has assisted a goal in four straight NWSL games in all competitions.

Match facts: Regular season play resumes for the first time in over a month as San Diego Wave FC hosts NJ/NY Gotham FC at Snapdragon Stadium on Saturday night, the fourth of six games across the league this weekend. The Wave are currently in 6th place with 21 points from 15 games played, while Gotham is in 3rdwith 25 points from 15 games played.

San Diego has hit a bit of a rough patch across the board as of late, now winless in nine straight matches in all competitions (D3 L6), the longest winless run by any team in all NWSL competitions in 2023. The Wave’s last victory was a 1-0 away win over Gotham, though, on June 4 via a Makenzy Doniak goal 44 seconds into the second half.

Gotham’s 25 points through 15 matches this year are the second-most the club has ever had at this stage of a season after the 30 points they collected as Sky Blue in the league’s inaugural season in 2013. The side has already earned nearly twice as many points as they collected all of last season as well (13), and will look to build momentum with a good result.

San Diego has won all three of its matches against Gotham FC by a combined score of 8-0. Only three teams in NWSL history have recorded four straight regular season shutout wins over a single opponent: North Carolina vs. Orlando (2018-19), Utah vs. Washington (2018-19), and FC Kansas City vs. Reign (2013).
