NWSL Preview: Kansas City Current (6-11-1) at San Diego Wave FC (9-6-3)

Snapdragon Stadium | San Diego, California – Saturday, September 6 at 10:00 PM ET

Players to watch:

San Diego defender Christen Westphal grabbed the assist on the Wave’s only goal of the game against the Dash last Sunday, bringing her total for the Wave in league play to five. The only member of a stacked San Diego squad with more league assists in team history is forward Alex Morgan, who has six.

Though bottom of the table, the Current have shown flashes of what they are capable of this season, often through attacking players Debinha and Cece Kizer, both of whom help lead the way in scoring with six and five goals respectively. However, in the last run of games, Kansas City’s attack has sputtered as the side has failed to score more than one goal in five consecutive games with Kizer only finding the back of the net once as the side collected 7 points (W2 D1 L2).

Match facts: With just four regular season contests remaining, San Diego Wave FC hosts the Kansas City Current at Snapdragon Stadium on Saturday night in the second of three contests across the evening. San Diego is currently atop the NWSL standings with 30 points from 18 games played, while Kansas City is in last with 19 points from 18 games played though not entirely without a shot at the playoffs just yet.

The Wave have won their last three games, having never won four in a row in all competitions in the team’s brief history. San Diego has, however, won three consecutive matches just one other time, in the Wave’s first three NWSL league games in franchise history (May 2022).

Kansas City have failed to score more than one goal in their last five league games, including being held scoreless in their last league match. However, the Current won two of those five games and have three total 1-0 wins this season, behind only the Courage with five such games. Though the side would need plenty of help from others, it sits just seven points out of a playoff position with Washington currently in 6th with 26 points.

Since the first meeting between the two teams, a 2-2 draw in Kansas City, the team on the road has won both matches, including the 2-0 San Diego victory in Kansas City in May. Kansas City attempted 20 shots in that game, having just one game with more shot attempts without scoring (26 vs. NCC in August 2021).
