NWSL Preview: Kansas City Current (4-9-0) at Portland Thorns FC (7-2-4)

Providence Park | Portland, Oregon – Saturday, June 10 at 10:00 PM ET

Players to watch:

Portland forward Morgan Weaver scored the fourth and final goal in Portland’s 4-2 win over Washington in the Thorns’ last league match. Prior to Weaver’s goal, each of the last nine goals scored by the Thorns in league play came from players heading to the World Cup, with fellow attackers Sophia Smith, Hina Sugita, and Christine Sinclair all on the scoresheet.

Kansas City forward Cece Kizer scored her sixth goal in 2023 in all competitions as the Current defeated the Pride last week. Kansas City is the only NWSL team with multiple players with six or more goals this season, with midfielder Debinha producing nine goals thus far. Outside of that pairing, the only player with multiple goals for the Current this year is defender Izzy Rodriguez.

Match facts: Portland Thorns FC sees the Kansas City Current come to town on Saturday night as the last of a full five-game slate across the league on the day. The Thorns can build on two consecutive wins after having won three out of its last four (L1) in the regular season. Meanwhile, the Current won their first in three (L2) with a result against Orlando but still remain a few points shy of competing for a postseason position.

Currently, Portland sits atop the NWSL standings in 1st place with 25 points from 13 games, while Kansas City is second-from-bottom in 11th place with 12 points from 13 games played.

The Thorns have scored at least once in 18 consecutive regular season matches at home, twice as many as the NWSL team with the next longest active such streak (Washington – 9). There have been three longer streaks in NWSL history (FC Kansas City – 25, North Carolina – 22 & 20).

Kansas City had lost each of its last six road games in regular season play prior to a 2-1 win over Orlando on Saturday. Both goals in the win came in the first half as the Current had not scored in the first half of a road regular season match prior to that since August 13, 2022.

Portland is unbeaten in eight all-time matches in all competitions against the Current (W6 D2), making them the only opponent that Kansas City has played more than three times but is yet to beat. The Thorns have won all four matches at Providence Park between the teams while only conceding once.
