TOP CAPS FACTS
Streak Snapped
- The Capitals have failed to qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2013-14, snapping an eight-season playoff streak. Washington’s eight-year streak was tied for second-longest active playoff streak in the NHL (Pittsburgh: 16 seasons; Nashville: 8 seasons).
- From 2014-15 to 2021-22, the Capitals had a record of 374-176-67 (815 points, .660 point percentage). In that span, the Capitals ranked second in the NHL in wins, points and point percentage and won a Stanley Cup (2018), two Presidents’ Trophies (2016, 2017) and five-straight division titles (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020).
- The Capitals finished with 100 or more standings points in six of the eight seasons during the streak. The only seasons in which the Capitals did not reach the 100-point mark from 2014-15 to 2021-22 were the shortened 2019-20 (90 points in 69 games – a 106-point pace) and the 2020-21 (77 points in 56 games – a 112-point pace) seasons.
- The Capitals have missed the playoffs for just the eighth time since the 1982-83 season (1997, 1999, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2014).
- This season, the Capitals have compiled 409 man-games lost due to injury or illness.
- The Capitals have played 51 of their 77 games (66.2 percent) without either Nicklas Backstrom, Tom Wilson or T.J. Oshie in the lineup and 43 of their 59 games (72.9 percent) without either John Carlson or Dmitry Orlov prior to trading Orlov to Boston on Feb. 23.
- Backstrom missed the Capitals’ first 42 games of 2022-23 after undergoing hip resurfacing surgery in June.
- Wilson, who was injured in Game 1 of the Capitals’ First Round playoff series against the Florida Panthers in 2022, missed the Capitals’ first 42 games of 2022-23 and seven additional games since his season debut on Jan. 8 due to injuries.
- Carlson missed 36-straight games from Dec. 27 to March 21 due to injury. At the time of his injury, Carlson led the Capitals in time on ice per game (23:24) and ranked tied for fourth on the team in points.
- Oshie has missed 18 games throughout this season, while starting goaltender Darcy Kuemper has missed nine.
- Forward Connor Brown, who the Capitals acquired from the Ottawa Senators in July, suffered a torn ACL in Washington’s fourth game of the season and has missed a total of 73 games.
