TOP CAPS FACTS
The Big 3-0

  • Alex Ovechkin scored his 30th goal of the season on Saturday vs. Philadelphia.
  • Ovechkin reached the 30-goal mark for the 17th time in his 18-year career, which tied former Capital Mike Gartner (17) for the most 30-goal seasons in NHL history.
  • Ovechkin, 37, scored his 30th goal in his 45th game of the season, tied for the sixth-fewest games required to reach the 30-goal mark in his career (2013-14: 34 GP; 2018-19: 39 GP; 2007-08: 39 GP; 2009-10: 40 GP; 2005-06: 43 GP; 2012-13: 45 GP; 2008-09: 45 GP).
  • Among players to begin a season at age 37 or older, Ovechkin required the fewest games in NHL history to reach 30 goals in a single campaign. Jean Beliveau (54 GP) required the second-fewest games to reach 30 goals in a single season (1968-69).
  • Ovechkin is the 11th different player aged 37 or older to score 30 goals in a season.
  • The only season in which Ovechkin did not score 30 goals was the shortened 2020-21 season, when he scored 24 goals in 45 games (0.53 G/GP).
  • Ovechkin ranks tied for fourth in the NHL in goals and 16th in points (49), through games played Jan. 14.
  • Ovechkin’s goal on Saturday also marked his 400th career goal scored at home. He joins Wayne Gretzky (492), Gordie Howe (449), Jaromir Jagr (411) and Mike Gartner (401) as the only players in NHL history to score 400 home goals.
  • Ovechkin is the NHL’s all-time leader in road goals (410).
  • Ovechkin is on pace to score 54 goals this season. Should Ovechkin reach the 50-goal mark, it would mark his 10th career 50-goal season, passing Gretzky and Mike Bossy (9) for the most in NHL history. In addition, Ovechkin would pass Gretzky (12) for the most 40-goal seasons in NHL history

TONIGHT’S MATCHUP
Tonight, the New York Islanders host the Washington Capitals in the first of four matchups between the two clubs this season. The last time these teams met was April 28, 2022 at UBS Arena, when five different Islanders found the back of the net and Mathew Barzal and Noah Dobson each recorded multi-assist games in a 5-1 Islander win. The Islanders collected five points in their season series against Washington last year (2-1-1), including points in three straight games against the Capitals on March 15, April 26 and April 28.

AGAINST THE METRO
Tonight, the Islanders look to improve upon their 9-4-0 record against Metropolitan Division opponents. The last time the Islanders faced a division opponent was December 29, a 5-1 win against the Columbus Blue Jackets. On home ice, the Islanders have a 5-2-0 record against Metropolitan foes this season. The Islanders’ nine intra-division victories are second-most in the Metropolitan, behind Carolina (12).

HOME STAND
Tonight, the Islanders play the fourth contest of a five-game home stand. They will play eight home games in the month of January, their busiest month this season. The Islanders have collected points in five of their last six home games, with a 4-1-1 record at UBS Arena since December 23. The Islanders are 9-5-1 at home since the beginning of November. The Islanders are 14-for-14 on the penalty kill in their last six matchups at home, and they have not allowed a power play goal on home ice since December 2 against Nashville (19-for-19). They enter tonight’s matchup 90.7% on the penalty kill at home, leading the NHL.

BOUNCING BACK
The Islanders hosted the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night, when Casey Cizikas and Anthony Beauvillier scored and the Islanders outshot Montreal 38-23 in a 2-1 Islander win. It was the Islanders’ first win in four games (since January 3 in Vancouver), and it was the fifth straight game in which the Islanders collected a point against an Atlantic Division opponent.
