November 5 – Vegas Golden Knights 6, Montreal Canadiens 4
The Vegas Golden Knights (11-2-0) picked up their seventh in a row as they knocked off the Montreal Canadiens (5-6-1), 6-4, on Saturday night at Bell Centre. Reilly Smith netted the only goal of the second period as Vegas carried a 2-1 lead into the final frame. Nick Suzuki tied the game less than a minute into the period, but Smith’s second of the night put the Golden Knights back on top. Keegan Kolesar and Nicolas Roy each found the back of the net in the span of 21 seconds to put the visitors up by three. On a Roll
Vegas has won seven in a row, its longest streak since winning a franchise record 10 straight from April 9 to 28, 2021. The Golden Knights and Boston are the only two teams with 11 victories this season, and the 11-2-0 start is the best in VGK history. The team’s 6-1-0 road start is also its best ever.

First Things First
Nicolas Hague’s opening goal in the first period at Montreal marked the ninth time Vegas has scored first against their opponent. The Golden Knights have scored six times in the first five minutes of the first period through 13 games, most recently at Ottawa (Mark Stone, 1:22). The Golden Knights are outscoring opponents 17-5 in the first period and lead the NHL in most first-period goals scored and fewest first-period goals allowed (tied). Vegas is 8-1-0 when they score first and 6-1-0 when leading after the first period.

In the last two games, nine Golden Knights have accounted for the team’s eleven goals, with Reilly Smith being the only multiple-goal scorer (3G) and Nicolas Hague and Zach Whitecloud both posting their first tallies of the season.

Cassidy’s Early Success
Bruce Cassidy has led the Golden Knights to tremendous success in his first season behind the bench, keeping pace with his former team – Boston – atop the NHL standings. The top two teams in the NHL have a new head coach, the earliest that that has been the case in a season in NHL history and the first time since the 1939-40 season. Cooney Weiland and Frank Boucher had the Bruins and Rangers as the No. 1 and No. 2-ranked clubs, respectively, after 146 contests in a 168-game NHL season. Cassidy is the first head coach in NHL history to win at least eight of his first 10 games with multiple franchises as he also began 8-2-0 with Boston in 2016-17. Cassidy also recently reached 300 wins as a coach in the NHL, making him the 12th winningest active head coach in the league, behind former Vegas head coach Gerard Gallant (328 wins).

Making the Minutes Count
Alex Pietrangelo has consistently been the leader in time-on-ice for the Golden Knights so far this season (TOI leader 12 of 13 games). The defenseman averages 23:41 minutes of ice time per game. Pietrangelo leads the Golden Knights in assists with ten, which is tied second of any defenseman and tied for 14th amongst all skaters in the NHL through Sunday’s games. On Nov. 1, Pietrangelo (0-3-3) factored on all three goals in an overtime thriller against Washington, including the game-tying tally and overtime winner, to record his 397th career assist, surpassing Mark Giordano (395) for the ninth-most assists among active defensemen. The Golden Knights are 6-0-0 when Pietrangelo records a point.

Twinning!
Alec Martinez and Reilly Smith are both one game away from skating in their 700th career game. Martinez, a defenseman, joined the Golden Knights Feb. 19, 2020, from the Los Angeles Kings. With Vegas, Martinez has appeared in 102 games, recording 49 points (14G, 35A). When he was with the Kings, Martinez played in 597 games (198PTS, 62G, 136A) and won two Stanley Cups. Smith, an original member of Vegas, became a Golden Knight in the 2017-18 expansion draft. Smith has appeared in 334 contests with Vegas, totaling 240 points (103G, 137A). Also skating previously with the Florida Panthers (162GP), Boston Bruins (163GP), and Dallas Stars (40GP), the forward has posted 428 total points (178G, 248A) in his NHL career. In Vegas’ victory against Anaheim on Oct. 28, Smith potted his 100th goal as a Golden Knight; he becomes the third player in franchise history to reach this milestone with the club (Jonathan Marchessault, William Karlsson). Prior to the start of their professional careers, Martinez and Smith both attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

Aye-Aye Captain!
Captain Mark Stone notched his fourth goal of the season top open the scoring on Nov. 3 at Ottawa. Stone has totaled 10 points (4G, 6A) this season, recording at least a point in seven of the first 13 games. His fast offensive start has included the game-winning goal in the season opener and his 300th career assist Oct. 22 vs. Colorado.

The Iron Man
Phil Kessel appeared in his 990th consecutive game on October 25th against the San Jose Sharks. This broke Keith Yandle’s all-time record for the most consecutive games played in NHL history. Additionally, Kessel scored his 400th career goal in the first period to become the 12th American-born player to score 400 NHL goals. Kessel joined the Golden Knights roster in August after skating for two seasons with the Coyotes. A two-time Stanley Cup champion (2015-16, 2016-17), Kessel has 961 points (400 G, 510 A) in 1,217 career NHL games. He ranks eighth among active players in career games played and tenth in career points.

Kessel’s streak started when he was a Maple Leaf in a matchup against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Nov. 3, 2009. The only players from that game that are still active are Luke Schenn (VAN), Victor Hedman (TBL), and Steven Stamkos (TBL). Alec Martinez and Alex Pietrangelo are the only members of the Golden Knights who had started their NHL careers when Kessel’s streak began.

Of all other skaters on the Golden Knights, the next longest active streak belongs to William Karlsson, who has skated in 72 consecutive games. For Karlsson to tie Kessel’s streak he would have to play in every game from now until the 28th game of the 2033-34 season. Throughout his streak, Kessel has dressed for four different franchises Toronto (446), Pittsburgh (328), Arizona (208), and Vegas (13). In his 996 games, Kessel has recorded 334 goals and 501 assists for a combined 835s points.

Against the Leafs
Earlier this season, the Golden Knights skated to a 3-1 victory against the Leafs at T-Mobile Arena. Vegas opened the scoring at 3:51 in the opening period with Nicolas Roy’s first goal of the year. In the middle frame, William Nylander tied the game with his fourth goal of the season as the teams entered the third level at 1-1. Chandler Stephenson scored in the first minute of the third period to give the Golden Knights a 2-1 lead. Michael Amadio tacked on an insurance goal as Vegas locked down the 3-1 victory. Vegas’ win over Toronto marked their first since November 19, 2019. Vegas owns an overall record of 3-3-3 in nine meetings against Toronto, the Golden Knights will look to secure back-to-back wins against the Leafs for the first time. With a win against Toronto, Vegas would record their first win at Scotiabank Arena, and it would be the first time the club swept a series against the Leafs.
