GOLDEN KNIGHTS LAST GAME RECAP
October 22 – Vegas Golden Knights 2, Colorado Avalanche 3
The Vegas Golden Knights (4-2-0) lost for the first time on home ice this season as they fell to the Colorado Avalanche (3-2-1), 3-2, on Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena. Nathan MacKinnon potted the game’s first goal at 5:38 of the opening frame. Jonathan Marchessault answered in the final minute of the frame as the teams went into the break knotted at 1-1. Evan Rodrigues was the only player to find the back of the net in the second period and the Avalanche carried the 2-1 edge into the third period. Valeri Nichushkin extended the Colorado leads to 3-1, but Chandler Stephenson answered to bring the Golden Knights back within one. Vegas’ comeback bid feel short as Colorado claimed the 3-2 win.

LAST GAME BY THE NUMBERS

  • Marchessault nets his 5th goal of the season
  • Stephenson’s goal marks his 2nd of the season
  • Logan Thompson (2-2-0) made 22 saves of 25 shots while in net
  • Vegas drops to 4-2-0 on their 2022-23 campaign and collect their first loss at home

The Iron Man
Phil Kessel joined the Golden Knights roster in August after skating for two seasons with the Coyotes. A two-time Stanley Cup champion (2015-16, 2016-17), Kessel has 957 points (399 G, 558 A) in 1,210 career NHL games. He ranks sixth among active players in career games played and ninth in career points and is one goal shy of becoming the 13th American-born player to score 400 NHL goals. Kessel has appeared in 988 consecutive NHL contests, and he will tie Keith Yandle’s all-time record of 989 on Monday against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Kessel’s streak started when he was a Maple Leaf in a match-up against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Nov. 3, 2009. The only players from that game that are still active are Luke Schenn (VAN), Victor Hedman (TBL), and Steven Stamkos (TBL). Of all other skaters on the Golden Knights, the next longest active streak belongs to William Karlsson, who has skated in 65 consecutive games. For Karlsson to tie Kessel’s streak he would have to play in every game from now until the 28th game of the 2033-34 season. The 17 Vegas skaters who have active consecutive game streaks combine for 442 consecutive games, less than half of Kessel’s streak. Alec Martinez and Alex Pietrangelo are the only members of the Golden Knights who had started their NHL careers when Kessel’s streak began. Throughout his streak, Kessel has dressed for four different franchises Toronto (446), Pittsburgh (328), Arizona (208), and Vegas (6). In his 988 games, Kessel has recorded 333 goals and 498 assists for a combined 831 points.

Spreading the Wealth
After the Golden Knights’ 5-2 win against the Jets on Thursday, 17 different Vegas players on the 23-man roster have recorded at least one point in the first four games of the season. Michael Amadio’s assist to William Karlsson’s goal in the first period against Winnipeg was his first point of the season, making him the 17th Vegas player to record a point on the year. This ties the franchise record of the second most Golden Knights players to have recorded one or more points in the opening five games of the season (2020-21) just behind the record of 18 set in the 2017-18 season. Additionally, with Chandler Stephenson’s first period goal, 11 different Golden Knights have scored at least one goal in the opening five contests of the season. Vegas has only seen this much variety in scoring in the 2020-21 and 2019-20 seasons (also 11 different players in 5 games played). Jonathan Marchessault currently leads Vegas with 4 goals and an assist for 5 points, followed by Jack Eichel (3G, 2A), and Alex Pietrangelo (0G, 5A).
