Game 49 – 1/24 – SJS 2 at DET 3 (OT)…Erik Karlsson (0g, 2a) recorded his league-leading 13th multi-assist game of the season while Timo Meier (1g, 0a) and Logan Couture (1g, 0a) lit the lamp, but the Sharks were defeated by the Detroit Red Wings, 3-2, in overtime. With two points on the night, Karlsson (15g, 49a) tied Sandis Ozolinsh for the fifth-most points in a season by a Sharks defenseman. Meier’s goal was his 28th since October 27, tied for sixth-most in the NHL, and Couture’s marker was 164th career road goal, surpassing Joe Pavelski for second most by a Sharks skater.

TONIGHT’S OPPONENT: CAROLINA HURRICANES
The Carolina Hurricanes bring a six-game point streak, with wins in five of those contests, into Friday’s meeting with the San Jose Sharks, most recently taking two points with an overtime win at Dallas on Wednesday. This is the second meeting of the year between Carolina and San Jose, with the Hurricanes winning in the Sharks’ home opener, 2-1, in October. Martin Necas leads the club with 42 points on the year and he’s tied with Andrei Svechnikov for the team lead with 19 goals. Brent Burns leads the club with 24 assists and is the top-scoring defenseman on the team with 32 points in his first season in Raleigh.

The Hurricanes posted a 3-2 overtime win over the Dallas Stars at American Airlines Center on Wednesday, as Martin Necas scored his second overtime winner against the Stars in 2022-23. Sebastian Aho scored his 200th career NHL/Hurricanes goal, also tying the franchise record for career shorthanded goals, and Brett Pesce earned two assists and a fighting major. Brent Burns also scored for Carolina, while Antti Raanta stopped all 15 shots faced in the final two periods to earn a relief win after Frederik Andersen left the game due to an upper-body injury.

HURRICANES vs. SHARKS SERIES NOTES
— Carolina and San Jose are facing in the second and final meeting between the teams during the 2022-23 season.
— The Hurricanes and Sharks are meeting for the 46th time in their regular-season histories. Carolina holds a 23-20-0-2 overall record, including a 14-8-0-0 home record and an 18-14-0-2 record since relocation.
— The Hurricanes lead the regular-season series 1-0-0 in 2022-23 (Sharks: 0-1-0).
— Carolina earned a 2-1 win over San Jose at SAP Center on 10/14. Sebastian Aho and Martin Necas each scored for the Hurricanes, while Antti Raanta stopped 18 of 19 shots faced in net.

— Sharks Assistant Coach Ryan Warsofsky served as an assistant coach with the Hurricanes’ AHL affiliate Charlotte Checkers in 2018- 19 before taking over as head coach of the Checkers in 2019-20 and later the Chicago Wolves from 2020-22. He helped Charlotte and Chicago win the franchise’s first two Calder Cup championships in 2019 and 2022.
