LAST GAME: Nov. 23, 4-1 loss at Vegas: The Senators fell to the Golden Knights for the eighth consecutive time with a 4-1 defeat at T-Mobile Arena. Vegas’ all-time mark against Ottawa improved to 9-1-0 to stand as their highest win and point total against any Eastern Conference opponent. Stone, Carrier, Karlsson and Eichel (into an empty net) all registered goals for the home side on a night which saw Pietrangelo skate in his 900th career regular season game. The lone offence came from Sanderson who provided his first career NHL goal, becoming the first Montana-born skater in league history to find the back of the net. An assist on the goal from Stützle saw him pass Daigle for most points in franchise history before the age of 21 (106). INDIVIDUAL NOTES
COACH SMITH: D.J. Smith was introduced as the Senators’ 14th head coach in franchise history on 5/23/19. A native of Windsor, Ont., Smith spent the four previous NHL seasons as an assistant coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Prior to joining the Maple Leafs (which was also the team for which he made his NHL playing debut in 1996-97), Smith guided the Ontario Hockey League’s Oshawa Generals to a record of 135-53-3-13 over three campaigns which included his having been recognized as the OHL’s Coach of the Year in 2013-14. One year later, he helped the team capture the Mastercard Memorial Cup. His 87 head coaching victories with Ottawa see him rank sixth in franchise history.
SECOND SEASON AS CAPTAIN FOR CHUCKY: Two-time NHL All-Star Brady Tkachuk was appointed the 10th captain in Senators franchise history on 11/5/21. A native of St. Louis, Tkachuk succeeded Erik Karlsson who served in the role for four seasons from 2014-15 to 2017-18. The bronze medal winner with Team U.S.A. at the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship is the first American-born skater to serve as team captain. Tkachuk is assisted by full-time alternates Thomas Chabot and Claude Giroux.
JAKE SANDERS”ONE”: In recording his first career NHL goal on Wednesday evening, Jake Sanderson became the first Montanaborn skater to find the back of the net in a league game. The Whitefish, Mont. native already stands as the lone Montana-born skater drafted into the NHL and is the state’s all-time leader in points just 19 games into his NHL career. The goal stood as his tenth point of the season which sees him tied with Minnesota’s Calen Addison for the points lead among rookie blueliners and in seeing his ten points come in 19 career games, he set a new franchise record for the fewest games among first year defencemen to reach the mark – a feat previously held by Maxime Lajoie who required 21 games during the 2018-19 campaign to reach double digit points.
ALL-TIME LEADERS: Chris Phillips is the Senators’ all-time leader in games played (1,179) … Daniel Alfredsson leads in goals (426), assists (682) and points (1,108) … Following Phillips is Alfredsson (1,178), Chris Neil (1,026), Wade Redden (838), Radek Bonk (689), Jason Spezza (686) and Mike Fisher (675) … Neil leads in penalty minutes (2,522) while Patrick Lalime holds the lead in shutouts (30) and ranks second (283) to Craig Anderson (435) in games played among goaltenders. The Ducks began a three-game homestand with a 3-2 win over the New York Rangers Wednesday at Honda Center. John Gibson stopped 41-of-43 shots to earn his fourth win and third 40-plus save game of the season. Mason McTavish scored his third goal and 10th point of the season (3-7=10). Dmitry Kulikov scored 39 seconds into the second period and added an assist on McTavish’s goal for his first multi-point effort of the season (1-1=2). Cam Fowler extended his point streak to five games (2-6=8) with an assist on Kulikov’s goal, matching the longest of his career (four prior times; last: Nov. 7-16, 2021; 1-4=5). TODAY’S GAME: The Anaheim Ducks hit the midway point of a three-game homestand in a matinee contest vs. the Ottawa Senators at Honda Center (12 p.m. PT, TV: Bally Sports SoCal AUDIO: Ducks Stream). Anaheim enters today’s contest with consecutive wins on home ice (2-0-0). Today marks Anaheim’s second of nine matinee contests in 2022-23 (two home, seven road), where the club is 0-1-0 to date. CLUTCH COMEBACKS: The Ducks lead the NHL with three third-period, multi-goal comebacks wins this season, including Oct. 12 vs. SEA (5-4, OT win, trailed 4-2 with 15:51 in third), Oct. 30 vs. TOR (4-3 OT win, trailed 3-1 with 12:36 remaining) and Nov. 5 @ SJS (5-4 shootout win, trailed 4-2 with 9:33 remaining). The Ducks have four comeback wins overall this season (also Nov. 15 vs. DET, trailed 2-1 in final minute of regulation). GENERATION Z: Center Trevor Zegras co-leads the Ducks in goals (8), one of two players 21 or younger to lead their team in goals this season (also Cole Caufield, MTL), while he ranks second among team leaders in points (8-9=17) and assists. Zegras has points 1- 4=5 points his last six games and 1-6=7 points his last nine contests. He has also scored 4-8=12 points his last 11 games and 6-8=14 points his last 15 outings. He recorded points in a career-tying four straight games Oct. 30-Nov. 5 (3-4=7), matching his prior streak set Apr. 24-29, 2022 (2-2=4). Zegras recorded his fifth career multi-goal game Oct. 30 vs. TOR (2-0=2), including his second career OT goal. The 21-year-old has recorded. His goal Nov. 17 @ WPG marked his 90th career point in 116 NHL games (34-56=90), the fifth- fewest games among Ducks skaters to reach the mark, trailing only Teemu Selanne (70 GP), Paul Kariya (89 GP), Chris Pronger (108 GP) and Scott Niedermayer (114 GP).
QUE RICO!: Center Adam Henrique has 7-3=10 points his last 10 games after he recorded points in a season-long six straight games Nov. 5-19 (5-3=8), his best as a Duck and one short of his career-long point streak set over 10 years ago in seven straight contests with New Jersey Nov. 25-Dec. 8, 2011 (2-7=9). He scored goals in a season-best three straight games Nov. 5-12 (3-0=3, +3; missed Nov. 9 due to birth of first child), including his 100th goal as a Duck (100-90=190) Nov. 12 vs. CHI, becoming the 10th player in franchise history to reach the milestone. Henrique scored his first goal after the birth of his daughter Nov. 10. Henrique leads Anaheim in FOW% (55.1) and is third in goals among Ducks leaders (6).
CAM’S CORNER: Defenseman Cam Fowler currently has a career-tying five-game point streak (2-6=8), matching his prior high set four prior times; last: Nov. 7-16, 2021; 1-4=5). The last Ducks defenseman with a longer run was Chris Pronger (six games, Oct. 29- Nov. 7, 2009; 3-6=9). Fowler recorded three straight multi-point efforts Nov. 15-19 (1-5=6), joining San Jose’s Erik Karlsson (four straight multi-point games, Oct. 27-Nov. 3; 7-4=11) as the only defensemen in the NHL with three or more consecutive multi-point outings. KLING-ON: Defenseman John Klingberg has tallied 1-5=6 points his 10 games, including his first goal as a Duck Nov. 15 vs. DET (game-tying goal with 47 second in regulation). Klingberg co-leads Ducks blueliners in scoring (1-7=8) and leads in assists, and ranks tied for third among team leaders in assists. He earned assists in four straight game Nov. 1-6 (0-5=5), the only Ducks defensemen in the past 10 years with a longer point streak are Kevin Shattenkirk (five straight games in 2021-22), Cam Fowler (five games in 2020-21) and Ben Lovejoy (five games in 2013-14). Among defensemen selected in the 2010 NHL Draft, Klingberg leads in career points (72-310=382), assists, primary assists (159), PPP (150), PPA (131) and OT goals (6).
M(A)C ATTACK: Rookie center Mason McTavish has picked up 3-7=10 points this season, tied for third among Ducks leaders in assists this season. McTavish recorded his 10th point Nov. 23 vs. NYR (3-7=10), with only Trevor Zegras (10 points in 15 GP in 2021-22) reaching the mark in fewer games the last 10 seasons. Among NHL rookies, McTavish ranks tied for third in scoring, trailing only Seattle’s Matty Beniers (6-8=14) and Arizona’s Matias Maccelli (1-10=11). He also ranks fifth in assists (7) among league newcomers. McTavish scored his first goal of 2022-23 Nov. 5 @ SJS (1-1=2), as part of his second career multi-point game (also Oct. 13, 2021 vs. WPG; 1-1=2).
REGENDA AGENDA: Rookie left wing Pavol Regenda scored his first career NHL goal Nov. 9 vs. Minnesota, marking his third point with Anaheim (1-2=3). Regenda recorded his first two career points (both assists, 0-2=2), Oct. 17 @ NYR after making his debut in the Ducks season opener Oct 12 vs. SEA. Prior to scoring his first NHL goal, Regenda had appeared in four games with San Diego (AHL), earning a point in each of his four games (2-2=4, +2), while scoring goals in each of his first two career AHL contests.
GO SHORTY: Isac Lundestrom scored his first goal of the season on his first career penalty shot attempt Nov. 6 vs. FLA, netting his fifth career shorthanded goal. The 20th career penalty shot in Ducks history came on his 23rd birthday. Lundestrom has scored five shorthanded goals since the start of the 2021-22 season, tied with Alex Formenton, Adam Lowry and Trevor Moore for the most in the NHL over that span.
DUCKS-SENATORS: Anaheim and Ottawa begin a two-game season series today at Honda Center. The Ducks have won four straight games against Ottawa and have earned points in nine of their last 10 overall (6-1-3). In Orange County, Anaheim has won seven of the last 10 meetings, posting a 7-1-2 record.
