The Islanders trailed by a goal with less than eight minutes remaining in regulation, then Scott Mayfield scored his fourth goal of the season to tie the game, and Zach Parise scored the game-winning goal in overtime to help the New York Islanders defeat the Columbus Blue Jackets, 4-3, Saturday night at UBS Arena. Brock Nelson scored two goals for the second time this season, Sebastian Aho notched two assists and Ilya Sorokin turned away 26 of 29 shots faced in his seventh win of the season.

TONIGHT’S MATCHUP
Tonight, the New York Islanders begin a four-game road trip as they visit the Ottawa Senators, in the first of three matchups between the two clubs this season. The last time these teams met was March 22, when Brock Nelson, Scott Mayfield and Anders Lee each recorded multi-point games in a 3-0 Islander win. Tonight’s game is the Islanders’ first visit to Canadian Tire Centre since December 7, 2021, a 5-3 Islander decision. Entering tonight’s matchup, the Islanders have an 8-2-0 record in their last ten games and look to capture their first win of the season against an Atlantic Division opponent.

STORYLINES

VISITING THE SENATORS
The last time the Islanders visited the Senators was December 7, 2021, a 5-3 Islander win. The Islanders swept their season series against Ottawa last season (3-0-0), including one shutout at home on March 22. Islanders defenseman Scott Mayfield recorded two points in each of the three meetings between these two teams last year, good for six points (1g, 5a), the most by an Islander against Ottawa in a single season since Ziggy Palffy (1995-96). Islanders forward Oliver Wahlstrom tallied two points (1g, 1a) the last time the Islanders visited Ottawa. Forward Mathew Barzal has recorded 13 career points in 12 games vs. the Senators, including nine assists, thirdmost amongst active Islanders. Zach Parise leads active Islanders in all three scoring categories (34 points, 13 goals, 21 assists) against Ottawa. Brock Nelson notched three assists the last time these teams met on March 22. The Islanders enter tonight’s game with a 10-2-0 record in their last twelve matchups with Ottawa, and a 6-2-1 record in Canadian Tire Centre since 2015. They look to earn their first win of the season against an Atlantic Division opponent tonight.

COMEBACK WINS
Saturday night vs. Columbus, the Islanders recorded their fourth comeback win in their last eight games, as Scott Mayfield found the back of the net with less than eight minutes remaining in regulation to tie the game. Zach Parise scored the game-winner 39 seconds into overtime to help the Islanders earn their fourth consecutive win against a Metropolitan Division opponent. Brock Nelson scored two goals for the second time this season, and his ten shots on goal were a career-high as well as the most by an Islander in a game since John Tavares (Jan. 22, 2017). His ten shots are tied with Jason Robertson (DAL) and Matthew Tkachuk (FLA) for the most in a game by an NHLer this season. It was the Islanders’ tenth win of the 2022-23 season, which they did not achieve in 2021-22 until January 1, 2022 (10-12-6). The Islanders recorded 46 shots on goal Saturday night, matching their season-high set on October 18 (vs. SJS).

ONTARIO
Six Islanders (Adam Pelech, Josh Bailey, Cal Clutterbuck, Matt Martin, Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Casey Cizikas) are Ontario natives. Jean-Gabriel Pageau is a native of Ottawa, and was selected by the Senators in the fourth round (96th overall) of the 2011 NHL Draft. He played 428 games and recorded 128 points (87 goals, 95 assists) with Ottawa.

IN THEIR LAST TEN
Entering tonight’s matchup, the Islanders are 8-2-0 in their last ten games and 4-1-0 in their last five games on the road. In their last ten games (Since October 26), the Islanders are tied with Boston and New Jersey for the league-lead in wins in that span (8). THE THIRD
The Islanders remain most productive in the third period. In their last three wins (Nov. 7, 8, and 12), the Islanders have outscored opponents 6-1 in the third frame. Every victory the Islanders have captured so far this season has included an Islander finding the back of the net in the third. Since October 26, more than 50% (18 of the last 32) of Islander goals have been scored in the third and the Islanders are 10-4-0 when they find the back of the net in the final frame.

FORWARD PRODUCTION
Nine Islanders forwards have recorded three or more goals through 16 games this season. Islanders forwards Anders Lee and Brock Nelson leads the team with eight goals. The Islanders are 5-2-0 when Lee finds the back of the net this season, and Nelson has scored a goal in the last seven consecutive Islander wins. Nelson leads the Islanders in points (17) and has been held off the scoresheet just three times since October 22. The Islanders are 5-0-0 when Josh Bailey records a point so far this season. Mathew Barzal leads the Islanders and is tied for fifth in the league in assists (16). He has 12 assists in his last 11 games and is the first Islander to have 16 assists through the first 16 games of the season since Pierre Turgeon (1992-93).

MILESTONES
Kyle Palmieri recorded his 400th career NHL point on Nov. 8 vs. the New York Rangers. He becomes one of four active Islanders to have recorded 400 career points, joining Brock Nelson, who reached 400 on Nov. 3 in St. Louis, Josh Bailey (560) and Zach Parise, who has 853 career points.

FACE-OFF WINS
Nov. 7 vs. Calgary, Islanders forward Jean-Gabriel Pageau recorded 20 face-off wins, good for a single-game season-high. It is the first time an Islander has recorded 20 wins on the face-off dot in a single game since January 13, 2017, when John Tavares recorded 21 vs. Florida. Pageau leads Islanders centers with 59.9% FOW.

BLUELINERS
Through 16 games, Islanders defensmen have recorded 37 points, and have scored 13 goals so far this season. An Islanders defenseman has found the scoresheet in 12 of 16 games this season. Saturday night, defensemen Sebastian Aho (first career multi-assist game) and Scott Mayfield (game-tying goal and assist) helped the Islanders to a 4-3 win over Columbus. Adam Pelech scored the game-tying goal on Nov. 8 vs. the Rangers, his first goal since February 24. Pelech set a new single-game season high amongst Islanders on Nov. 3, as he skated 24:30 TOI (his highest TOI since Dec. 19, 2021). Pelech leads the Islanders with a plus-9 rating through 16 games. November 7 vs. Calgary, Noah Dobson recorded his second career OT game-winning goal in a 4-3 win vs. the Flames. Ryan Pulock has recorded a plus-3 rating in three different contests this season, including twice since Oct. 26. Scott Mayfield and Robin Salo each recorded their first career multi-goal games on Oct. 15. It was the first time since January 1993 that two Islanders defensemen have recorded multi-goal outings in the same contest. Robin Salo’s +4 rating on October 15 was a career-high and matched the Islanders’ single-game high set last season by Brock Nelson (Nov. 4 vs. MTL). He is the first Islander defenseman since Denis Potvin (most recently in 1982) to record two goals and record a +4 rating in the same game.

OTTAWA SENATORS NOTES:

LAST GAME: Nov. 12, 4-1 win at Philadelphia: The Senators recorded their first road victory of the season to break a seven-game losing streak with a 4-1 victory at Wells Fargo Center. Giroux made his initial return to Philadelphia after spending 15 seasons with the club and registered three assists to extend his point streak to eight games becoming the fourth player in team history to record a point streak of at least eight games in their first year with the club. DeBrincat tallied twice on the man advantage to register at least two power-play goals in one game for the third time in his career. Chabot and Stützle (with what was his 100th career point) also tallied for the visitors. Tkachuk added three assists for Ottawa to equal a single game high while Hayes had the lone goal for the Flyers. Talbot turned aside 37 shots to earn the win for Ottawa while Hart made 23 saves in taking the loss for Philadelphia. INDIVIDUAL NOTES
COACH SMITH: D.J. Smith was introduced as the Senators’ 14th head coach in franchise history on 5/23/19. A native of Windsor, Ont., Smith spent the four previous NHL seasons as an assistant coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Prior to joining the Maple Leafs (which was also the team for which he made his NHL playing debut in 1996-97), Smith guided the Ontario Hockey League’s Oshawa Generals to a record of 135-53-3-13 over three campaigns which included his having been recognized as the OHL’s Coach of the Year in 2013-14. One year later, he helped the team capture the Mastercard Memorial Cup. His 86 head coaching victories with Ottawa see him rank sixth in franchise history.

SECOND SEASON AS CAPTAIN FOR CHUCKY: Two-time NHL All-Star Brady Tkachuk was appointed the 10th captain in Senators franchise history on 11/5/21. A native of St. Louis, Tkachuk succeeded Erik Karlsson who served in the role for four seasons from 2014-15 to 2017-18. The bronze medal winner with Team U.S.A. at the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship is the first American-born skater to serve as team captain. Tkachuk is assisted by full-time alternates Thomas Chabot and Claude Giroux.

ALL-TIME LEADERS: Chris Phillips is the Senators’ all-time leader in games played (1,179) … Daniel Alfredsson leads in goals (426), assists (682) and points (1,108) … Following Phillips is Alfredsson (1,178), Chris Neil (1,026), Wade Redden (838), Radek Bonk (689), Jason Spezza (686) and Mike Fisher (675) … Neil leads in penalty minutes (2,522) while Patrick Lalime holds the lead in shutouts (30) and ranks second (283) to Craig Anderson (435) in games played among goaltenders.
