COMEBACK WIN
Saturday night, the Islanders hosted the Stanley Cup Champion Colorado Avalanche at home at UBS Arena. After the Avalanche opened up a 3-0 lead, five different Islanders found the back of the net in the second and third periods to help the Islanders defeat the Avalanche, 5-4. It was the first time since November 16, 2019 ( a 4-3 SO win vs. Philadelphia) that the Islanders had overcome a 3-0 deficit and won and the first time since February 18, 2018 that the Islanders overcame a three-goal deficit on home ice. It had not happened on home ice and in regulation since 1984. Brock Nelson scored the game-winner, an empty-net goal in the third frame. It was the fifth time in club history that an empty-netter became the eventual game-winning goal. Saturday night’s game was the Islanders’ first set of back-to-back wins this season (after a win in Carolina on October 29) and their third win in three days.

THIRTEEN
Islanders forward Mathew Barzal has recorded ten assists through nine games this season. He is the first Islander since Vladimir Malakhov (1993) to tally ten assists through his first nine games. Barzal has found the scoresheet in each of his last four games, including an assist on Scott Mayfield’s game-tying goal on Saturday night vs. Colorado, and two assists in the Islanders’ 6-3 decision over Carolina on Friday. Barzal is the team leader in assists and points, and his ten helpers are tied for fourth-most in the league (Pastrnak, BOS).

TWELVE
Islanders forward Josh Bailey skated in his 1,000th career NHL game on Friday night at PNC Arena. The Bowmanville, ON native tallied his second goal in two games and the eventual game-winner. It is only the 12th time in NHL history that a player has been credited with the game-winning goal in their 1,000th career NHL game. Bailey joins Bryan Trottier and Denis Potvin as the only skaters in club history to record 1,000 or more games as an Islander, and he became the 73rd player in NHL history to record 1,000 games with the same club.

ELEVEN
Islanders netminder Ilya Sorokin turned away all 41 shots he faced on Wednesday night vs. the Rangers, helping the Islanders earn their first shutout of the season. It was the 11th shutout of Sorokin’s career, and the 11th time in franchise history that an Islanders goalie made more than 40 saves while recording a shutout. Including Wednesday, three of those 40-plus-save shutouts are owned by Sorokin. It was the Mezhdurechensk, Russia native’s first career shutout vs. the Islanders’ Metropolitan Division rival, New York Rangers. Sorokin became the sixth goaltender in the NHL to record a shutout this season and the first goaltender in wthe Metropolitan Division to do so.

THREE-GOAL SCORERS
The Islanders are one of two teams (Boston) to have seven players to have scored at least three goals so far. It is the first time since the 1989-90 season that seven Islanders players have recorded at least three goals through the first nine games. All five Islanders who found the back of the net on Saturday night potted their third goal of the season.

PENALTY KILL
The Islanders set an NHL record as they did not allow a power play goal through their first eight games of the season, and went a franchise record 29-for-29 on the penalty kill to start the season. They allowed one power play goal on Saturday night, yet their 96.7% PK remains the best in the league through nine games.

VISITING THE BLACKHAWKS
The Islanders last visited the Blackhawks on October 19, 2021, a 4-1 win at United Center. Oliver Wahlstrom recorded the first two-goal game of his career, and Anthony Beauvillier and Cal Clutterbuck each scored to help the Islanders earn their first win of 2021-22. Tonight’s matchup is the Islanders second straight agaist a Central Division team, after they hosted the Avalanche on Saturday. Last season, the Islanders collected points in nine of their 16 matchups against Central Division teams and finished 2021-22 with a 7-7-2 record against them.
The Islanders active points leader against the Blackhawks is Zach Parise, who has tallied 16 points (seven goals, nine assists) in 39 games against Chicago. Kyle Palmieri is second, with 15 points (six goals, nine assists). Islanders forward Jean-Gabriel Pageau has found the scoresheet each of the last two times he has played Chicago.

FIFTY
Islanders netminder Semyon Varlamov turned away 33 of 37 shots faced on Saturday night to help the Islanders earn a 5-4 win over Colorado. It was Varlamov’s 50th win as an Islander. He becomes the 12th goalie in franchise history to record 50 wins with the club. It was Varlamov’s 263rd win, good for 11th -most amongst active NHL goaltenders. Through 24 starts against Chicago, Varlamov has recorded a 14-6-4 record, including a .934 SV% and 2.26 GAA. His record against the Blackhawks is second only to Los Angeles’ Jonathan Quick amongst active goaltenders, and he leads active netminders in SV% against them (minimum 10 games played).

BLUELINERS
Islanders defensemen continue to find the scoresheet as two of five goals scored on Saturday night were from defensemen (Dobson, Mayfield). The Islanders have seen nine defenseman goals so far this season, leading the NHL.

Through nine games, Islanders blueliners have recorded 23 points. An Islanders defensman has found the scoresheet in all but one game so far this season.

Alexander Romanov recorded his first points as an Islander in back-to-back games, tallying assists on Friday and Saturday vs. Carolina and Colorado.

Ryan Pulock has recorded assists in each of his last three games.

Adam Pelech notched his second-multi assist game of the season (2a) on Oct. 26 to help the Islanders defeat the Rangers at home. It was his ninth career multi-assist game. Oct. 18, Pelech recorded two assists to help the Islanders to a 5-2 victory vs. San Jose.

Noah Dobson scored the first Islander goal of the season, Thursday Oct. 13. Dobson is the first Islander since Chris Campoli (2007) and only the second in franchise history to find the back of the net in each of the Islanders’ first two games of the season. He was the first Islander defenseman since Johnny Boychuk in 2014 to tally at least one point in the first three games of the season.

Scott Mayfield and Robin Salo each recorded their first career multi-goal games on Oct. 15. It was the first time since January 1993 that two Islanders defensemen have recorded multi-goal outings in the same contest. Robin Salo’s +4 rating on October 15 was a career-high and matched the Islanders’ single-game high set last season by Brock Nelson (Nov. 4 vs. MTL). He is the first Islander defenseman since Denis Potvin (most recently in 1982) to record two goals and record a +4 rating in the same game.
