STORYLINES

1000
Tonight, Islanders forward Josh Bailey can play his 1,000th career NHL game. A native of Bowmanville, ON, Bailey will become the third player in club history to log 1,000 games in an Islander sweater, joining Bryan Trottier (1,123) and Denis Potvin (1,060). Bailey’s 1,000th game as an Islander will be just the 73rd time in NHL history that a player has skated 1,000 games with a single club. He is the second NHL player this season to reach the 1,000-game milestone (Goligoski, MIN). Bailey was selected by the Islanders in the first round (9th overall) of the 2008 NHL Draft. He made his NHL debut on November 11, 2008 vs. the Philadelphia Flyers, and scored his first NHL goal on January 2, 2009 vs. the Arizona Coyotes (then the Phoenix Coyotes). Bailey’s 556 career points as an Islander are eighth-most in club history, as he passed Bob Nystrom (513), Bob Bourne (542) and John Tonelli (544) during the 2021-22 season. His 379 career assists are fourth-most in club history and he has tallied five 30-assist seasons. Bailey is also an NHL All-Star (2018). Bailey recorded his first goal of the 2022-23 campaign on Wednesday night, a 3-0 Islander victory, in his 999th career NHL game.

PENALTY KILL
The Islanders tied an NHL record on Wednesday night as they completed their seventh consecutive contest without allowing a power play goal to start the season. The Islanders’ seven-game, 25-for-25 penalty kill streak to start the season is also a franchise record. The club killed all three penalties they faced in their last game, a 3-0 victory against the Rangers on Wednesday night, and are the only NHL club to not allow a power play goal this season.

ELEVEN
Islanders netminder Ilya Sorokin turned away all 41 shots he faced on Wednesday night vs. the Rangers, helping the Islanders earn their first shutout of the season. It was the 11th shutout of Sorokin’s career, and the 11th time in franchise history that an Islanders goalie has made more than 40 saves while recording a shutout. Including Wednesday, three of those 40-plus-save shutouts are owned by Sorokin. It was the Mezhdurechenk, Russia native’s first career shutout vs. the Islanders’ Metropolitan Division rival, New York Rangers. Sorokin is the sixth goaltender in the NHL to record a shutout this season and the first goaltender in the Metropolitan Division to do so.

MULTI-POINT GAMES
Three Islanders recorded multi-point contests in Wednesday night’s victory: Kyle Palmieri tallied his first multi-goal game of the season, and Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Adam Pelech each notched two assists. So far this season, Islanders players have tallied multi-point contests 15 times and in four of the club’s seven games.

BLUELINERS
An Islanders defenseman recorded an assist on all three goals scored in the team’s last matchup on Wednesday. Islanders defensemen have recorded seven goals through seven games, which is tied for the league lead. An Islanders defenseman has assisted or scored on 15 of 22 Islander goals so far this season, and blueliners have found the scoresheet in all but one game so far this season.

Ryan Pulock tallied his first goal of 2022-23 on Saturday night vs. Tampa Bay, becoming the fourth Islanders defenseman to find the back of the net this season. He added an assist on Wednesday night vs. the Rangers while he led Islanders in TOI (23:44) and recorded a team-high plus-3 rating.

Adam Pelech notched his second-multi assist game of the season (2a) on Oct. 26 to help the Islanders defeat the Rangers at home. It was his ninth career multi-assist game. Oct. 18, Pelech recorded two assists to help the Islanders to a 5-2 victory vs. San Jose.

Noah Dobson scored the first Islander goal of the season, Thursday Oct. 13. Dobson is the first Islander since Chris Campoli (2007) and only the second in franchise history to find the back of the net in each of the Islanders’ first two games of the season. He is the first Islander defenseman since Johnny Boychuk in 2014 to tally at least one point in the first three games of the season.

Scott Mayfield and Robin Salo each recorded their first career multi-goal games on Oct. 15. It was the first time since January 1993 that two Islanders defensemen have recorded multi-goal outings in the same contest.

Robin Salo’s +4 rating on October 15 was a career-high and matched the Islanders’ single-game high set last season by Brock Nelson (Nov. 4 vs. MTL). He is the first Islander defenseman since Denis Potvin (most recently in 1982) to record two goals and record a +4 rating in the same game.

BACK-TO-BACK
The Islanders enter their second of 15 back-to-back series of games tonight and look to capture their first front-end victory of 2022-23. The Islanders finished last season 10-7-1 on the front-end of back-to-backs.

FISH AND TRIPS
Sebastian Aho scored the go-ahead goal in the third period against VAN on Monday to extend his point streak to five games (10/14- 10/24: 4g, 5a), the longest point streak by any Hurricanes player this season. Aho recorded a point in each game of Carolina’s recent West Coast road trip, becoming the seventh player in team history (since relocation) to find the scoresheet in every game of a five-or-more-game trip.

Players with a point in every game of a five-or-more-game road trip, team history (1997-present):
Keith Primeau, 2/7/98-3/8/98: 5-5—10 in 6 GP
Cory Stillman, 11/29/05-12/10/05: 1-5—6 in 6 GP
Eric Staal, 2/2/13-2/12/13: 3-6—9 in 6 GP
Andrej Sekera, 2/25/14-3/4/14: 2-4—6 in 5 GP
Victor Rask, 10/13/16-10/25/16: 4-3—7 in 6 GP

Sebastian Aho, 10/14/22-10/24/22: 4-5—9 in 5 GP

SVECHING FIRE
Andrei Svechnikov scored his seventh goal of the season in just his sixth game at VAN (10/24), tying Geoff Sanderson (1993-94) for the most goals by any Whalers/Hurricanes skater through the team’s first six games of any campaign. Through the franchise’s first 41 NHL seasons (1979-21), Sanderson’s 1993-94 campaign was the only instance of a player scoring seven goals in Hartford/Carolina’s opening seven games, but Svechnikov has now accomplished that feat in back-to-back seasons (2021-22: 7g in 7 GP). He has yet to score an empty-net goal in 2022-23 after scoring three of those first seven goals into an empty net last season.

SURGING FORWARDS
After Martin Necas assisted on Andrei Svechnikov’s opening goal at VAN (10/24), Sebastian Aho scored 0:50 into the third period to retake the lead for Carolina. Aho (4-5—9), Svechnikov (7-2—9) and Necas (3-5—8) have each recorded at least four more points than any other Hurricanes skater this season (Brent Burns, Stefan Noesen: 4a), and Monday’s win marked the fourth game this season that featured all three players earning a point. This season marks the third time in franchise history and first time since relocation that Hartford/Carolina has had three different players register eight or more points in the team’s first six games of any campaign (1985-86: Kevin Dineen, Ron Francis, Ray Neufeld, Torrie Robertson; 1993-94: Andrew Cassels, Geoff Sanderson, Pat Verbeek).

O CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN
Jordan Staal recorded an assist on Jesper Fast’s game-winning goal against the Canucks on Monday, marking his first point of the 2022-23 season. Staal has now earned 364 points (138g, 226a) in 667 games with the Hurricanes, passing Erik Cole (2001-08, 2009-11: 168-195—363) for the fifth-most points by any player in team history (since relocation). Staal is set to play his 668th game with Carolina against the Islanders on Friday, tying Cam Ward (2005-18: 668 GP) for the seventh-most games played in franchise history and the fourth-most since relocation.

Most points, team history (1997-present):
Eric Staal (2003-16): 322-453—775
Rod Brind’Amour (2000-10): 174-299—473
Sebastian Aho (2016-present): 186-224—410
Jeff Skinner (2010-18): 204-175—379
Jordan Staal (2013-present): 138-226—364

Most games played, team history (1997-present):
Eric Staal (2003-16): 909 GP
Glen Wesley (1997-08): 729 GP
Rod Brind’Amour (2000-10): 694 GP
Cam Ward (2005-18): 668 GP
Jordan Staal (2013-present): 667 GP

MAKING THEM PAY
Andrei Svechnikov opened the scoring on the power play at VAN (10/24) as Carolina went 1-for-3 on the man-advantage. The Hurricanes have now converted on five of their 22 power-play opportunities this season (22.7%), with all five goals coming in their last four games (10/17-10/24: 5-for-17, 29.4%). Svechnikov paces the team with three goals on the man-advantage in 2022-23, ranking tied for sixth in the NHL in that category. Brent Burns recorded an assist on his goal on Monday and now ranks tied for fourth among all NHL defensemen with three power-play assists this season.

PULLING A FAST ONE
Jesper Fast scored his first goal of the season at VAN (10/24), and the tally stood as his ninth career game-winning goal and third with the Hurricanes (also 4/1/21 at CHI, 12/18/21 vs. LAK). Fast scored at 1:27 of the third period after Sebastian Aho lit the lamp at 0:50, with the two goals marking the fifth-fastest two goals from the start of any period in team history (since relocation). Fastest two goals from the start of a period, team history (1997-present): Justin Williams and Michael Ferland, 11/18/18 vs. NJD – 0:30, P1 Jordan Staal and Nathan Gerbe, 12/1/13 vs. VAN – 0:49, P2 Nino Niederreiter and Andrei Svechnikov, 2/4/21 at CHI – 0:50, P2 Patrick Dwyer and Erik Cole, 11/9/10 vs. EDM – 1:15, P1 Sebastian Aho and Jesper Fast, 10/24/22 at VAN – 1:27, P3

SHOOTERS SHOOT
The Hurricanes allowed a season-low 16 shots against the Canucks on Monday, including just three shots in the third period, Carolina’s fewest shots against in any period this season. They have now allowed fewer than 20 shots on goal twice in 2022-23 (10/14 at SJS: 19). Carolina’s 25.8 shots against and +10.5 shot differential per game are the third-fewest (NJD: 21.4, SEA: 25.3) and second-highest (NJD: +18.3) marks of any NHL team this season, respectively. Andrei Svechnikov leads the team with 23 shots on goal in 2022-23, and Brent Burns’ 3.67 shots on goal per game ranks third among all NHL defensemen with at least two games played.

SEEING DOUBLE
Sebastian Aho (CAR) and Sebastian Aho (NYI) look to play against each other for the fourth time in their NHL careers (2/16/18, 3/18/18, 4/24/22). The Hurricanes have posted a 2-1-0 record in their previous three matchups, with Aho (CAR) recording two assists in those contests. They are one of nine pairs of players with the same first and last name to face off in an NHL game, and one of only two pairs to do so in the 21st century (Petr Svoboda, TBL/TOR, 2000-01).

SCARY GOOD
After losing back-to-back October games for the first time since 2019-20, the Hurricanes rebounded with a win at VAN (10/24). Carolina won 13 consecutive October games from 10/26/19-10/17/22, and during Rod Brind’Amour’s tenure as head coach, they have now posted a 26-9-3 record during the month.

Highest points percentage in October, 2018-present:
Boston Bruins: .743 (27-8-4)
Carolina Hurricanes: .724 (26-9-3)
Edmonton Oilers: .675 (26-12-2)
Washington Capitals: .675 (23-9-8)
Buffalo Sabres: .663 (24-11-5)

GOING BACK-TO-BACK
The Hurricanes are opening their first of 14 sets of back-to-back games in 2022-23. Carolina went 10-3-1 (.750) in the first game and 6-5-3 (.536) in the second game of back-to-backs last season.
