TEAM NOTES
TONIGHT’S MATCHUP
Tonight, the New York Islanders visit the New Jersey Devils in the second of four meetings between the two clubs this season. The last time these teams met was Oct. 20, when Brock Nelson, Bo Horvat and Kyle Palmieri each recorded multi-goal games to help the Islanders capture a point in overtime at UBS Arena. The Islanders have earned points in their last six straight games, and enter tonight’s matchup with a 6-2-0 record their last eight visits to Prudential Center. The Islanders enter tonight’s matchup with points in their last six straight games (3-0-3), following a 1-0 shootout loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday night at home. Friday night in Ottawa, the Islanders recorded a season-high three goals in the second period to defeat the Senators, 5-3. The Islanders defeated the Philadelphia Flyers, 3-2, on Wednesday night, earning their first regulation win since November 2 at Washington. They snapped a seven-game winless streak on Nov. 18 in Calgary, their first shootout win of the season.
SPLIT SHUTOUT
Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin turned aside all 40 shots he faced on Saturday night in a shootout loss to Philadelphia. It was Sorokin’s 18th career shutout and second of the 2023-24 campaign, and the ninth time this season that Sorokin has faced at least 35 shots. Sorokin’s effort helped the Islanders become the first NHL team this season to have multiple goalies record multiple shutouts. The last time the Islanders reached a shutout after a scoreless regulation and overtime was Dec, 19, 2022, in Colorado. Sorokin was also in net for that game and turned aside 46 shots faced. Saturday’s matchup was the sixth time in franchise history that the Islanders played a scoreless game decided by a shootout (2-4).
