TONIGHT’S MATCHUP

Tonight, the New York Islanders visit the Edmonton Oilers in the first of two matchups between the two clubs this season. The last time these teams met was Jan. 5, 2023 at Rogers Place, when the Islanders fell to Edmonton, 4-2. Tonight’s matchup is the first Pacific Division matchup of the season for the Islanders, who finished the 2022-23 campaign with a 10-6-0 record against Pacific opponents. Tonight, the Islanders can improve to 3-2-0 on the road, and they will look to snap a four-game losing streak and capture their first win in Rogers Place since March 7, 2017.

SCORING FIRST

Nov. 4 vs. Carolina, the Islanders improved to 5-0-3 when scoring the first goal this season. They have scored first in eight of their 13 games in 2023-24, and have collected at least one point each time they have found the back of the net first. OILERS NEW BENCH BOSS

The Edmonton Oilers announced on Nov. 12th the hiring of Kris Knoblauch as the 18th head coach in Oilers franchise history. Oilers Hall of Fame defenceman Paul Coffey joins Knoblauch as an assistant coach. Knoblauch, 45, had previously been at the helm of the Hartford Wolf Pack, the AHL affiliate of the New York Rangers, since the 2019-20 season. Compiling a record of 119-90-32 during his four-plus seasons behind the bench, he guided Hartford to the third round of the Calder Cup playoffs last season. Prior to his time in Hartford, the Imperial, Saskatchewan native spent four-plus seasons in the OHL with the Erie Otters. After assuming head coaching duties for the team during the 2012-13 season, Knoblauch led the Otters to an unprecedented CHL record, four-consecutive 50-win seasons. Following their appearance in OHL finals in 2014-15 and his OHL Coach of the Year award in 2015-16, the Otters claimed the league title in 2017. From Erie, Knoblauch joined the coaching staff of the Philadelphia Flyers where he served as an assistant coach during the 2017-18 and 2018-19 campaigns. In July of 2019, he was named the 7th head coach in Hartford Wolf Pack history. Beginning his coaching career in 2006-07, Knoblauch joined the Prince Albert Raiders serving as an assistant coach before returning to the Kootenay Ice in 2007-08. Eventually taking over as head coach for two seasons beginning in 2010-11, the Knoblauch-led Ice claimed a WHL championship in just his first season leading the team. As a player, Knoblauch made 213 WHL appearances over five seasons with the Red Deer Rebels, Edmonton/Kootenay Ice and Lethbridge Hurricanes from 1995-96 through 1998-99. Following his junior career and before moving behind the bench, he suited-up for five seasons at the University of Alberta and one season with the Central Hockey League’s Austin Ice Bats.

HATS OFF

On Nov. 11 at SEA, Zach Hyman recorded a hat trick in the first period and became the fourth Oilers player in the past decade to record a natural hat trick, joining Connor McDavid (2x: Feb. 20, 2021 vs. CGY & Oct. 4, 2017 vs. CGY), James Neal (Oct. 8, 2019 at NYI) and Milan Lucic (April 6, 2017 at SJS).

GOALS BY PERIOD

The Oilers rank T-3 rd in the NHL in first period goals (19) through 13 games. In 2022-23, the Oilers ranked 1st in the NHL in goals for in the first period (92) and the second period (128).

EK-CELLENT

Mattias Ekholm’s powerplay goal on Nov. 6 @ VAN marked is his first of the season and first since 2018-19. Ekholm has recorded four points on the season (1G, 3A) and averages 20:05 in ice time per game. He now has points in three of his last four games, recording three points (1G, 2A). Ekholm played his 750th career game on Nov. 6 at VAN.

His 127th power play goal in the 1st period against Nashville, moved him into sole possession of 1st in power play goals in Oilers franchise history. Ryan Smyth and Glenn Anderson sit second with 126.
