TONIGHT’S OPPONENT: NEW JERSEY DEVILS
With four consecutive wins and victories in five of six, the New Jersey Devils come to San Jose for the penultimate contest of their west coast swing, a 1 p.m. puck drop Monday at SAP Center. The Devils defeated the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday, 5-2, with Yegor Sharangovich and Jack Hughes each registering a pair of assists in the game. Mackenzie Blackwood stopped 35 of 37 shots faced. New Jersey is paced offensively by Jack Hughes, who tops the club and Metropolitan Division with 28 goals and 54 points. He has 13 points (8g, 5a) in seven games since the turn of the calendar year and has points in seven of the last eight games.

DEFENSE TO OFFENSE…With an assist provided by Marc-Edouard Vlasic on Oskar Lindblom’s second period goal at DAL on Dec. 31, San Jose became the first NHL team to have their defensemen reach 100 points on the season. San Jose blueliners then added five points (1g, 4a) on Jan. 1, with four of the six in the game finding the score sheet, and another three helpers on Jan. 6 at Anaheim. Last week, Sharks defensemen combined for three points against Boston on Jan. 7 with Mario Ferraro scoring a goal and Matt Benning and Vlasic adding assists, a goal from Jaycob Megna and a helper from Erik Karlsson on Tuesday and another Karlsson helper on Wednesday. Benning then notched a helper Friday against Edmonton. The Sharks lead the league in assists (95) and points (115) from defensemen this season.
