BIG VILLE STYLE
Detroit acquired goaltender Ville Husso from St. Louis in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft (Aleksanteri Kaskimäki) on July 8 and subsequently signed him to a three-year contract extension with an average annual value of $4.75 million.

  • Ville Husso has posted three shutouts in 16 games with the Red Wings, tying Winnipeg’s Connor Hellebuyck for the league lead. Husso had three shutouts in 57 appearances with the Blues from 2020-22.
  • Became the third Red Wings/Falcons/Cougars goaltender with three shutouts prior to his 15th appearance with the franchise, joining Hap Holmes (4 in 1926-27) and Dolly Dolson (3 in 1928-29).
  • Has allowed one goal or fewer in seven of his nine victories with Detroit.
  • Stopped all 29 shots he faced in his Red Wings debut on Oct. 14 vs. Montreal, becoming the second goalie in franchise history to post a shutout in his team debut, joining Dave Gatherum who did so on Oct. 11, 1953 vs. Toronto.

EARLY RETURNS
Detroit forwards Andrew Copp, Austin Czarnik, Dominik Kubalík, Matt Luff and David Perron, and defensemen Ben Chiarot, Robert Hägg and Olli Määttä have made an immediate impact to begin the 2022-23 season. The eight players, all signed as free agents by the Red Wings in July, have combined for 70 points (24-46-70) through the first 23 games of the campaign.

  • Ben Chiarot netted his second goal of the season on Nov. 19 at Columbus. He recorded a goal and an assist on Oct. 15 at New Jersey for his first multi-point game in a Detroit uniform.
  • Andrew Copp dished out a pair of assists on Nov. 30 vs. Buffalo for his third multi-point game of the season. Copp, who picked up an assist in his 500th career NHL game on Nov. 17 at San Jose, has six points (1-5-6) in his last seven appearances.
  • Austin Czarnik netted his first goal/point in a Detroit jersey on Nov. 8 vs. Montreal. The Metro Detroit native has also tallied 14 points
    (6-8-14) in 12 games with the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins.
  • Robert Hägg ranks among the team leaders with 33 hits (T6th) and 17 blocks (7th). He registered an assist on Oct. 21 at Chicago and Oct. 25 vs. New Jersey.
  • Dominik Kubalík ranks second among Detroit skaters with 23 points (9-14-23) through 23 games, including a power play goal with 2:17 left in overtime on Nov. 6 against the New York Rangers. He posted a five-game point streak from Oct. 15-25 (4-6-10 in 5 GP).
  • Matt Luff (IR) earned his first goal/point with Detroit on Nov. 6 against the New York Rangers. He registered seven points (3-4-7) in five appearances with Grand Rapids to begin the 2022-23 season.
  • Olli Määttä has registered seven points (2-5-7) and a plus-seven rating through 23 games. He is one point shy of matching his scoring total with Los Angeles in 2021-22 (1-7-8 in 66 GP).
  • David Perron has totaled 17 points (7-10-17) in 23 games, including a pair of game-winning goals. Perron, who recorded his 400th career NHL assist on Nov. 12 at Los Angeles, authored a five-game point streak from Nov. 12-23 (1-7-8 in 5 GP).

MICHIGAN MEN
The Red Wings have four Michigan-born players on their active roster in forwards Andrew Copp (Ann Arbor), Austin Czarnik (Washington Township) and Dylan Larkin (Waterford), and defenseman Jordan Oesterle (Dearborn Heights).

  • Andrew Copp recorded 81 points (40-41-81) in 107 games at the University of Michigan from 2012-15, serving as team captain during his junior season. Prior to his collegiate career, Copp skated with the U.S. National Team Development Program from 2010-12.
  • Austin Czarnik attended Romeo High School before playing with the NTDP from 2008-10.
  • Dylan Larkin was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year after logging 47 points (15-32-47) and penalty minutes in 35 games at Michigan during the 2014-15 campaign. He was also selected to both the 2014-15 Big Ten All-Freshman Team and the All-Big Ten First Team, in addition to being named an AHCA Second Team All-American. Larkin previously skated with the NTDP from 2012-14.
  • Jordan Oesterle attended Dearborn Divine Child High School before tallying 34 points (7-27-34) in 113 games at Western Michigan University from 2011-14. He helped the Broncos win a CCHA tournament championship as a freshman.

EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND

  • Lucas Raymond collected 12 points (6-6-12) and a 25.0 shooting percentage in a 13-game span from Oct. 29-Nov. 25.
  • Required the fewest games in nearly 30 years by a Red Wings player to record their first 70 NHL points (29-42-71 in 102 GP). Among players to debut with the franchise, the most recent player to reach the 70-point mark in fewer than 102 games was Vyacheslav Kozlov (89 GP; March 22, 1994)
  • Has netted six goals – including two GWGs – on home ice since Oct. 29 vs. Minnesota.
  • Tied with David Perron for the team lead with two game-winning goals, potting the GWG on Oct. 29 vs. Minnesota and Nov. 5 against the New York Islanders.

CZECH MATE

  • Dominik Kubalík places among the team leaders with nine goals (T1st), 14 assists (T2nd), 23 points (2nd), four power play goals (T1st), 11 power play points (1st), one overtime goal (1st) and 68 shots (2nd) through 23 games.
  • Collected 12 points (5-7-12) and three power play goals in 14 games dating back to Nov. 3 vs. Washington.
  • Paces the Red Wings with seven multi-point games, including four-straight multi-point outings from Oct. 17-25 (3-6-9 in 4 GP).

SWEDISH MAFIA KEEPS GROWING

  • Jonatan Berggren has recorded six points (2-4-6) in 10 games to begin his NHL career.
  • Became the eighth Red Wings rookie in the past 30 years to record six-or-more points through their first nine contests, joining Lucas Raymond (4-5-9 in 2021-22), Moritz Seider (0-8-8 in 2021-22), Filip Zadina (1-5-6 in 2019-20), Taro Hirose (1-6-7 in 2018-19), Dennis Cholowski (2-4-6 in 2018-19), Dylan Larkin (2-5-7 in 2015-16) and Henrik Zetterberg (3-3-6 in 2002-03).
  • Registered seven points (4-3-7) in seven games with the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins to begin the 2022-23 campaign.
  • Made his North American professional debut with the Griffins in 2021-22 and set franchise records for a rookie in assists (43), points (64), game-winning goals (7) and overtime goals (3) in 70 games.
  • Named AHL Rookie of the Month for April after totaling 20 points (6-14-20) in 14 contests. He finished the season with 26 points (7-19-26) in his last 18 games, including a season-high 11-game point streak (6-13-19) to close out the year.

GERMAN ENGINEERING

  • Moritz Seider set career highs in assists (3) and points (3) in his 100th NHL game on Nov. 19 at Columbus.
  • Has totaled six points (2-4-6) in his last seven contests since Nov. 17 at San Jose.
  • Became the fourth defenseman in franchise history to register 60-or-more points (9-52-61 in 105 GP) at age 21 or younger, joining Steve Chiasson (15-48-63 in 139 GP), Reed Larson (19-42-61 in 89 GP) and Nicklas Lidström (11-49-60 in 80 GP).
  • Also moved past Nicklas Lidström (11-49-60 in 80 GP) for the most assists by a Detroit defenseman before age 22.
  • Netted his first goal of the season on Nov. 17 at San Jose, which proved to be the GWG. He led all NHL rookie defensemen with four game-winners in 2021-22.

LOVE TO ‘C’ IT

  • Dylan Larkin is in his third season as Detroit’s captain and eighth NHL campaign. He was named the 37th captain in franchise history on Jan. 13, 2021, becoming the first Michigander and native metro Detroiter to wear the ‘C’ for the Red Wings, assuming a captaincy that had been vacant for two seasons following the end of Henrik Zetterberg’s career in 2017-18 due to injury.
  • Ranks among the team leaders with nine goals (T1st), 17 assists (1st), 26 points (1st), a plus-seven rating (T4th), four power play goals (T1st), nine power play points (2nd), one shorthanded goal (T1st) and 78 shots (1st) through 23 games.

A LOOK AT DECEMBER
The Blue Jackets snapped their three-game losing streak (0-2-1) and picked up a point for the second consecutive contest (1-0-1) following a 4-1 victory at the Jets on Friday. The club is now 5-3-2 in the last 10 games overall. The club concluded a two-game stretch against Western Conference teams with Friday’s game at Winnipeg (1-0-1). Columbus will play three-straight contests against the East from December 4-7 (Detroit, Pittsburgh and Buffalo). The Blue Jackets play 15 games in the month of December with two sets of back-to-back games (Dec. 6 at PIT/Dec. 7 vs. BUF; Dec. 19 vs. DAL/Dec. 20 at PHI).

TWO DIFFERENT STRETCHES
Nine of the club’s first 12 games were competed against teams that made the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs, including facing off against the Stanley Cup champion Avalanche twice and Stanley Cup finalist once (Tampa Bay Lightning). The club is now at the end of a stretch of 11-of-13 contests from November 10-December 7 played against teams that failed to make the postseason. The only playoff teams over the second stretch are Florida (Nov. 20) and Pittsburgh (Dec. 6).

FROM THE BLUELINE
CBJ blueliners, who posted 1-1-2 on Friday, have now collected 8-21-29 in the last 16 outings and 12-27-39 in 22 games this season to rank seventh-T in the NHL in goals. Defenseman Erik Gudbranson scored his first goal with the club on Friday at Winnipeg, picking up his 100th career point in the process (28-72-100 in 662 games). Vladislav Gavrikov, who has tallied an assist in two-straight games (0-2-2), notched his second career overtime winner and fifth career game-winning goal on Nov. 15 vs. the Flyers, finishing with 1-1-2, while also skating in a career-high 28:40 TOI (previous 28:20 on Apr. 22, 2022 vs. OTT). He became the fifth different defenseman in NHL history to score each of his first two or more goals of a season in overtime and is also one off the franchise record for overtime goals by a defenseman in a single season (3; Seth Jones, 2016-17 & 2018-19).

ROOKIE REPORT
The club currently has seven rookies on the roster with forwards Trey Fix-Wolansky, Liam Foudy, Kent Johnson and Carson Meyer along with defensemen Nick Blankenburg (injured), Marcus Bjork and Jake Christiansen. The skaters have had a strong start to the season, combining for 8-15-23 in 22 games. They have helped CBJ rank fifth among NHL teams in points and sixth in goals. Johnson, who notched his first career multi-point game on Nov. 25 vs. the Islanders with one goal and one assist, ranks fourth-T among NHL rookies in goals, fifth-T in points-per-game (.63; min. 10 GP) and eighth-T in points with 5-7-12 in 19 games. He has registered 2-4-6 in his last eight outings and 5-6-11 in his past 16 contests played. Bjork has 0-2-2 in the past five games (overall 1-3-4 in nine GP). The blueliner tallied points in his first two NHL games after scoring his first career goal in his NHL debut on Nov. 12 at NY Islanders and picking up his first career assist on Nov. 15 vs. Philadelphia. He is the first blueliner and seventh player overall in franchise history to score in his debut.

CAPTAIN BOONE JENNER
Boone Jenner notched his 300th career point with an assist on Friday at Winnipeg and now has points in each of his last two games (1- 1-2). He finished the month of November with 8-3-11 in 11 contests, which was the third-most goals in the month in franchise history (tied). The forward ranks eighth-T in the NHL in goals scored at home this season with 9-5-14 in 15 outings. He also ranks seventh-T in the NHL in faceoff wins (271-of-481 faceoffs; 56.3 pct.). The 29-year-old, who was selected 37th overall at the 2011 NHL Draft, is the longest-tenured Blue Jacket in his 10th season with the club, including his second as the team’s captain. The forward skated in his 600th career game on Nov. 4 vs. Colorado, becoming just the third player to reach the milestone with the franchise. With his second goal on Nov.15 vs. Philadelphia, Jenner notched his 150th career goal with the Blue Jackets and became the third player to reach the milestone with the franchise, joining Rick Nash (289) and Cam Atkinson (213). He also ranks fifth on the franchise’s all-time list in points.

Left wing Johnny Gaudreau recorded his first three-assist effort and third three-point outing of the campaign on Friday and now has registered multiple points in three-straight games (1-6-7). He has collected 3-13-16 in his last 10 contests following Friday’s stat line. Friday also marked his 24th multi-assist game since the start of last season. Gaudreau’s 71 assists in the 2022 calendar year are tied for the second-most in the NHL (Matthew Tkachuk) and trailing only McDavid (72). The forward tied the franchise record for assists in the month of November with 3-11-14 in 11 outings (Andrew Cassels in November 2002). The six-time All-Star leads the club in assists and scoring and ranks second in goals with 8-17-25 in 22 games while recording points in 15 of his contests. The winger has done most of his damage at home with 8-12-20 in 15 outings, ranking eighth-T in the NHL in points. He played in his 316th consecutive game on Friday, the third-longest active iron man streak in the NHL and trailing only Phil Kessel (1,008) and Brent Burns (704). The Salem, New Jersey native, who signed a seven-year contract with Columbus in July, has collected 218-416-634 in 624 NHL games, including a career-high 40-75-115 in 82 games with Calgary last season when he earned First Team All-NHL honors.

TOUGH TO REPLACE Z
Zach Werenski recorded his first multi-point game of the season with 1-1-2 in a win over Philadelphia on Nov. 10 to extend his points-streak to three-straight games (1-3-4) before leaving the with an upper body injury. Unfortunately, that was the last CBJ will likely see the club’s top defenseman this regular season as it was announced Friday that he suffered a separated shoulder and torn labrum and likely to miss six months. He led the club’s blueliners in goals, assists and points at the time of the injury with 3-5-8 in 13 games. The two-time NHL All-Star blueliner set single-season career highs in assists, points and time on ice and posted the third-most assists (tied) and points by a defenseman in a single season in franchise history with 11-37-48 and 25:40 TOI in 68 games in 2021-22.

UP IN CLEVELAND
Columbus’ AHL affiliate, the Cleveland Monsters, have kicked off the 2022-23 season going 10-6-3 after a 4-3 victory over the Rochester Americans on Saturday. The club has points in nine of its last 10 games (6-1-3) and sits in third place in the North Division. Right Wing Trey Fix-Wolansky, who was recalled on Nov. 20, ranked second in the AHL in goals (tied) and points at the time of his recall with 10-12-22 in 14 games. The forward recorded goals in each of his last four outings and four-plus points in three of them with 7-7-14 and was named the AHL player of the week on Monday, Nov. 21 (5-5-10 in 3 GP). Kirill Marchenko leads AHL rookies in points and ranks fourth-T in goals with 8-11-19 in 16 contests. Samuel Knazko (1-9-10 in 17 GP) and David Jiricek (3-7-10 in 12 GP) rank third-T among AHL rookie defensemen in scoring. The Monsters return to action when they visit the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Friday, Dec. 9.
