THANKSGIVING WEEKEND ON THE ROAD

The Blue Jackets have won two-straight games for the second time in 2023-24 (Oct. 20-21), posting a season-high seven goals in a 7-3 win over Chicago on Wednesday and then earning a 2-1 victory at New Jersey on Friday. The club improved to 11-7-1-0 in games played on Black Friday, following Friday’s win. The two-game trip is the lone two games over a six-game stretch played away from Nationwide Arena from Nov. 22-Dec. 1. Columbus plays its fourth of 13 back-to-back sets of the season on Sunday at Carolina and Monday against Boston.

JACKETS ON THE KILL

The club denied the NHL’s top power play team, New Jersey, on both power play chances on Friday and has now killed off 34-of-36 (94.4 pct.) opponent power play opportunities in the past 14 games dating back to Oct. 28 vs. the NY Islanders. CBJ had killed off all 22 opponent power play opportunities over nine contests from Oct. 28-Nov.14. The nine games without allowing a power play goal were tied for the second-longest stretch in franchise history (Feb. 21-Mar. 9, 2013) and trailed only the 11 games from Dec. 31, 2018-Jan. 29, 2019. The club ranks second in the NHL in penalty kill percentage this season (LA; 89.4 pct.) at 88.5 pct. (54-of-61) and lead the League in penalty kill percentage since Oct. 20, killing off 46-of-50 opponent power play chances over the last 18 games (92.0 pct.).

BLOCK IT LIKE IT’S HOT

CBJ has been credited with 191 blocked shots over the past 10 games, including the now sixth-highest total in a game this season (tied) with 30 on Nov. 6 at Florida. It was also tied for the second-most (3rd time) blocked shots in a single game in franchise history (since 2005-06), trailing only the 34 blocked shots registered on Mar. 17, 2012 at Vancouver. The club ranks second in the NHL in blocked shots (400) and third in blocked shots-per-60 minutes (18.80). Defenseman Erik Gudbranson tallied an assist on Friday to give him points in two-straight games (1-1-2) and 1-5-6 in his past eight contests. The blueliner leads the team and ranks sixth-T among all NHL skaters in blocked shots in 2023-24 with 53.
