The Week, Black Friday & Old Friends
The Devils are scheduled to play in three games this week, which entails a home-at-home set on Fri., Nov. 24, and Sat., Nov. 25. The team’s first game resulted in a 4-0 shutout loss at Detroit. The team opens its fourth back-to-back set for 2023-24, and second home-at-home, back-to-back set this season. The last time the team experienced a home-at-home, back-to-back, set was Oct. 12-13, when the team defeated Detroit on Oct. 12 (4- 3), but suffered a 4-3 shootout loss to Arizona on Oct. 13. Friday’s contest vs Columbus marks the team’s first day game for the 2023-24 season (any puck drop prior to 5:00 P.M local time.). The team will wear its alternate Jersey for the second time this season (1-0-0). Former Devils defenseman Damon Severson is experiencing his first season with Columbus, but will not have the opportunity to play against his former squad for the first time (upper-body inj.) since departing. Severson signed an eight-year contract worth $50 million ($6.25 million AAV) on June 9 with New Jersey and was then traded to Columbus (sign & trade). The Devils received a third-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft in exchange for Severson, which was then flipped in a trade with Yegor Sharangovich to Calgary for Tyler Toffoli. Columbus Assistant Coach Mark Recchi returns to the Rock, after Recchi spent two seasons with New Jersey as an Assistant Coach from 2020-21 to 2021-22. The last time that the Devils played on Black Friday was Nov. 25, 2022, after a 3-1 win at Buffalo.
