JANUARY 21, 2023 – CALGARY FLAMES [6] vs. Tampa Bay Lightning [3]
The Calgary Flames continued a four-game homestand on Saturday afternoon when they welcomed the Tampa Bay Lightning for a matinee contest on Hockey Day in Canada. The Flames outshot Tampa 15-4 in the opening frame and would be rewarded for their sustained pressure when Nazem Kadri tipped home his team-leading 18th goal of the season to make it 1-0 Flames through 20. Lightning does strike twice, and in the second Steven Stamkos and Vladislav Namestnikov would net a pair of quick goals to put Tampa in front. Tyler Toffoli would equalize the game shortly after, and Rasmus Andersson would give the Flames the lead just before the end of the period to make it 3-2 Flames. In the third, Dillon Dube would find himself on a partial break and he would snap home his 11th on the year to give the Flames a two-goal lead. The Lightning would try and battle back with Anthony Cirelli drawing Tampa within one, but a pair of empty netters from Huberdeau and Coleman would ice the game for the Flames, and they would prevail 6-3.

This is the second of two matchups this season between the Flames and Blue Jackets. The Flames lost in Columbus 3-1 earlier this season. LAST TIME VERSUS THE JACKETS:
The Calgary Flames began a three-game road trip at Nationwide Arena for their first meeting against the Columbus Blue Jackets back on December 9th. The Flames fell behind early when Patrik Laine was sprung on a breakaway and buried his seventh on the year to put the Jackets up one just 1:02 into the game. In the second, Columbus would once again strike early into the period with Eric Robinson finding the back of the net on a partial break to put the Blue Jackets up 2-0 and it would stay that way through 40. In the final 20 the Flames would fire 14 shots on goal with Michael Stone finally converting for Calgary with the goalie pulled to draw the Flames within one. Columbus would add an empty netter and hang on for a 3-1 win.

The Flames lead the NHL with 28 games decided by one goal. Noah Hanifin had three assists on Saturday afternoon, his third three-assist game as a member of the Flames. His three such games are the fourth most by a Flames defenseman aged 25 or younger in franchise history. Darryl Sutter became the winningest coach in Flames franchise history on Saturday afternoon with his 194th victory behind Calgary’s bench.
