CZECH IT OUT
Martin Necas tallied an assist on Carolina’s only goal at MIN (11/19), giving him three points in his last two games (11/17-11/19: 1g, 2a). He posted two points (1g, 1a) against the Avalanche on Thursday for his team-leading seventh multi-point game of the season and paces the Hurricanes in assists (14) and points (22) in 2022-23. Necas has already recorded more than half of his scoring output from last season (14-26—40 in 78 GP), and he also needs just one more multi-point game to match his total from 2021-22, when he finished tied for sixth on the team with eight such games. His seven multi-point outings are also just three shy of tying his single-season career high (10 in 2020-21).

SOMETHING’S FISHY
Sebastian Aho scored Carolina’s lone goal at MIN (11/19) and has now lit the lamp in back-to-back games (11/17-11/19: 2g) for the third time this season (also 10/14-10/17: 2g, 2a; 10/22-10/24: 2g). Aho has paced the Hurricanes in goals in each of the last five seasons (2017-22), and his nine goals in 2022-23 trail only Andrei Svechnikov (12) for the team lead. He has now scored 191 goals in his NHL/Hurricanes career, and with his next tally, he will tie Pat Verbeek (1989-95: 192) for the eighth-most goals in franchise history.

HURRICANE MARTY
Jordan Martinook skated in his 248th game with the Hurricanes against the Wild on Saturday, and he has now spent the majority of his NHL career with Carolina. He was drafted by Phoenix in the second round (28th overall) of the 2012 NHL Draft and played 247 games with the Coyotes from 2014-18. Martinook was acquired by the Hurricanes on 5/3/18 and has now tallied 75 points (31g, 44a) with Carolina after posting 65 points (26g, 39a) with Arizona. He ranks fifth on the team in scoring with nine points (4g, 5a) through 18 games this season and recently posted a three-game point streak (11/10-11/14: 2g, 3a), tied for the longest of his NHL career.

MISBEHAVIN’ SLAVIN
Jaccob Slavin was assessed a minor penalty for tripping at MIN (11/19), marking his first penalty in 35 games (2/16-11/19), with each of his last two coming on the road against the Wild. In each of the past two seasons, Slavin has been named a finalist for the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, awarded to the player who best combines sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct with high-level play, and he became just the fourth defenseman to ever win the award in 2020-21. He has now accumulated just 72 penalty minutes in his NHL/Hurricanes career, marking the second-fewest penalty minutes per game of any defenseman in league history to skate in at least 400 career games, yet he leads all blueliners in takeaways (508) since debuting with Carolina in 2015-16.

THE RIGHT STEF

He was held without a point in his only eight NHL games with SJS, TOR and Carolina over the past two seasons (2020-22), and his five assists in 2022-23 are his most in any campaign since 2018-19, when he equaled that total in 41 contests. He fell to 5-0-1 in the regular season after becoming the 12th goaltender in NHL history to win each of his first five regular-season appearances. Kochetkov also began his AHL career with a 12-0-1 record and has now suffered just three regulation losses in 26 regular-season games since making his North American professional debut in February (NHL: 5-0-1, AHL: 15-3-2).

Carolina has won at least 50.0% of its draws in 14 of 18 games this season, and the team’s 54.1% faceoff win percentage ranks third in the NHL behind only CHI (57.6%) and BOS (56.2%). Jordan Staal went 24-for-27 (88.9%) at the faceoff dot on Thursday, marking his highest career win rate in any game taking at least 15 draws. His 24 faceoff wins also tied for the most in a single game by any NHL player in 2022-23 (Bo Horvat, VAN, 11/5 vs. NSH: 24-for-36).
