THE GREAT 88
Martin Necas scored the Hurricanes’ opening goal vs. NYI (10/28) and has earned a point in back-to-back games (10/24-10/28: 1g, 1a) and six of seven games played this season. He opened the campaign with a four-game point streak from 10/12-10/20 (3g, 4a), and he has now tallied nine points (4g, 5a) in seven games this season, ranking tied for first on the team in points and tied for second in goals. Necas earned 40 points (14g, 26a) in 78 contests with the Hurricanes last season, including just two assists through Carolina’s first seven contests.
BURN NOTICE
Brent Burns scored his first goal with Carolina against NYI on Friday and has registered a point in back-to-back games (10/24-10/28: 1g, 1a). He has recorded five points (1g, 4a) through seven games in 2022-23 and leads all Hurricanes blueliners in that category. With the goal, the 228th of his NHL career, Burns passed Steve Duchesne (2986-02, LAK/PHI/QUE/STL/OTT/DET) and Kevin Hatcher (1985-01, WSH/DAL/PIT/NYR/CAR) for the 12th-most goals by any blueliner in NHL history. He leads all active defensemen in goals, assists (554) and points (782).
ANDREI THE GIANT
Andrei Svechnikov scored his seventh goal of the season in just his sixth game at VAN (10/24), tying Geoff Sanderson (1993-94) for the most goals by any Whalers/Hurricanes skater through the team’s first six games of any campaign. Through the franchise’s first 41 NHL seasons (1979-21), Sanderson’s 1993-94 campaign was the only instance of a player scoring seven goals in Hartford/Carolina’s opening seven games, but Svechnikov has now accomplished that feat in back-to-back seasons (2021-22: 7g in 7 GP). He has yet to score an empty-net goal in 2022-23 after scoring three of those first seven goals into an empty net last season.
LEADING BY EXAMPLE
Sebastian Aho (4g, 5a), Martin Necas (4g, 5a) and Andrei Svechnikov (7g, 2a) rank tied for the team lead in points through the Hurricanes’ opening seven games of the season. They have each registered a point in the same game four times in 2022-23, and they are just the second trio of players in Whalers/Hurricanes history to each post at least nine points through the first seven games of any campaign. Rob Brown (3-7—10), John Cullen (2-9—11) and Pat Verbeek (4-5—9) each accomplished the feat through Hartford’s first seven games in 1991-92.
QUICK ON THE DRAW
The Hurricanes won 54.0% of their faceoffs vs. NYI (10/28), and they have now won over 50.0% of their draws in each of their last three games (10/22-10/28) and six of their seven contests in 2022-23 (10/20 at EDM: 48.7%). Carolina’s 54.5% faceoff win rate ranks fifth in the NHL this season, behind CHI (57.7%), BOS (57.4%), NJD (56.8%) and LAK (54.6%). Sebastian Aho (59.3%), Martin Necas (53.3%) and Jesperi Kotkaniemi (52.8%) are each winning a career-high percentage of their draws, and albeit on only 24 faceoffs so far, Paul Stastny has posted a team-high 70.8% win rate after finishing above 54.0% at the dot in each of the last nine seasons (2013-22).
ROAD SCHOLAR
Sebastian Aho was held scoreless vs. NYI (10/28), ending his five-game point streak (10/14-10/24: 4g, 5a), the longest point streak by any Hurricanes player in 2022-23. Aho recorded a point in each game of Carolina’s recent road trip, becoming the seventh player in team history (since relocation) to find the scoresheet in every game of a five-or-more-game trip. Players with a point in every game of a five-or-more-game road trip, team history (1997-present):
Keith Primeau, 2/7/98-3/8/98: 5-5—10 in 6 GP
Cory Stillman, 11/29/05-12/10/05: 1-5—6 in 6 GP

Victor Rask, 10/13/16-10/25/16: 4-3—7 in 6 GP
Justin Williams, 2/29/20-3/10/20: 6-0—6 in 5 GP
Sebastian Aho, 10/14/22-10/24/22: 4-5—9 in 5 GP
SCARY GOOD
The Hurricanes began the season 3-0-0, extending their October win streak to 13 games dating back to 10/26/19. However, after earning just one point from two games in Alberta (10/20-10/22: 1-0-1) and posting a bounce-back win at VAN (10/24) followed by a loss vs. NYI on Friday, Carolina is now 4-2-1 in 2022-23. Since Rod Brind’Amour took over as head coach in 2018-19, the Hurricanes have now registered a 26-10-3 record in October games, marking the second-highest October points percentage of any NHL team over that span.
Highest points percentage in October, 2018-present:
Boston Bruins: .750 (28-8-4)
Carolina Hurricanes: .705 (26-10-3)
Edmonton Oilers: .675 (26-12-2)
Washington Capitals: .675 (23-9-8)
Buffalo Sabres: .663 (24-11-5)
