O CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN
Jordan Staal scored Carolina’s lone goal at COL (11/12), and he has now scored in back-to-back games (11/10-11/12: 2g) after being held to just one goal through his first 13 contests in 2022-23. Staal scored in consecutive games played twice last season (4/10-4/12: 4g, 4/16-4/21: 3g), and his last goal streak of at least three games came in 2020-21, when he posted a four-game goal/point streak from 2/11-2/17 (5g, 1a). Staal has now tallied 368 points (141g, 227a) in his Hurricanes career and needs one more point to tie Geoff Sanderson (1991-97: 196-173—369) for the 10th-most points in franchise history.

HITTING THEIR STRIDE:
Jordan Staal (1g), Jesper Fast (1a) and Jordan Martinook (1a) connected for the Hurricanes’ only goal against the Avalanche on Saturday, and all three have now found the scoresheet in back-to-back games. Fast (1-1—2, +2) and Martinook (1-1—2, +3) each posted their first multi-point game of the season vs. EDM (11/10), while Staal scored at 19:59 of the second period, just Carolina’s third goal in the final second of any period in the past seven campaigns (Jeff Skinner: 10/28/16 vs. NYR, 3rd; Andrei Svechnikov: 2/18/22 vs. NSH, 2nd). Before this two-game span, the trio had been held scoreless in each of Carolina’s previous five games (10/31-11/9).

HATS OFF
Andrei Svechnikov scored his second hat trick of the season (3g) vs. EDM (11/10), becoming the fifth different player in team history (since relocation) to score multiple hat tricks in a single season (Kevyn Adams: 2005-06; Sami Kapanen: 1997-98; Jeff Skinner: 2013-14, 2015-16; Eric Staal: 2005-06, 2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11). Both of Svechnikov’s hat tricks came against the Oilers, marking just the second time that any Whalers/Hurricanes player has scored multiple hat tricks against the same opponent in a single season (Kapanen, also vs. EDM). Svechnikov is the first player in franchise history and just the second NHL player since 2018-19 to score two hat tricks in his team’s first 14 games of the season, joining Connor McDavid (EDM, 2022-23), who is also the only other player with multiple hat tricks in 2022-23. Sebastian Aho has also scored a hat trick this season (11/4 vs. BUF: 3g, 1a), and the Hurricanes’ three hat tricks rank tied with the Oilers for the league lead. Before this season, no Hurricanes/Whalers player had ever scored multiple hat tricks prior to the team’s 19th game (Ron Francis, 1985-86), and Hartford/Carolina had never had multiple team hat tricks prior to the team’s 15th game (2007-08: Rod Brind’Amour, Cory Stillman).

NAUGHTY BY NECAS
Martin Necas registered two assists vs. EDM (11/10) for his sixth multi-point game and fourth multi-assist game in 2022-23, both of which are team highs. Necas posted just eight multi-point games and three multi-assist games in 78 contests last season, finishing tied for sixth and tied for eighth on the team in those categories, respectively.

GOAL RUSH
Andrei Svechnikov (3g) posted his fourth multi-point game and team-leading third multi-point game of the season vs. EDM (11/10), with his third goal marking the 100th goal of his NHL/Hurricanes career. He reached the milestone in 297 games, marking the ninth-fewest games needed to reach 100 career goals in franchise history and the fourth-fewest by any player debuting with Carolina since relocation. Selected second overall by Carolina in the 2018 NHL Draft, Svechnikov is also the first player from his draft class to reach the 100-goal plateau. He has earned eight points in his last eight games (10/31-11/12: 4g, 4a), and his 11 goals in 2022-23 rank tied for third in the NHL, trailing only Connor McDavid (EDM, 15) and Bo Horvat (VAN, 12).

Eric Staal, 2003-07: 268 GP
Jeff Skinner, 2010-2014: 269 GP
Sebastian Aho, 2016-19: 273 GP
Andrei Svechnikov, 2018-22: 297 GP

FINNISH FISH
Sebastian Aho tallied two assists against the Oilers on Thursday, marking his fourth multi-point game and third multi-assist game of the season. He has posted 104 multi-point games in his NHL/Hurricanes career, tying Rod Brind’Amour (2000-10) for the fifth-most multipoint games in franchise history. Aho has also recorded 418 points (189g, 229a) in his NHL/Hurricanes career, passing Jeff O’Neill (1995-04: 198-218—416) for the fifth-most points in franchise history. He has tallied 17 points (7g, 10a) this season and ranks second on the team in assists and points.

Pat Verbeek (1989-95): 106
Sebastian Aho (2016-present): 104
Rod Brind’Amour (2000-10): 104

CREASE IS THE WORD
Frederik Andersen was placed on injured reserve due to a lower-body injury, and Pyotr Kochetkov and Antti Raanta will man the crease in his absence. Raanta suffered his second straight regulation loss at COL (11/12) after making a season-high 34 saves on 36 shots against the Panthers on Wednesday. He has now earned a 3-2-1 record, 2.47 goals-against average and team-high .911 save percentage in 2022-23. Kochetkov was recalled from Chicago (AHL) on Tuesday and made his Hurricanes season debut vs. EDM (11/10), stopping 20 of 22 shots to improve to 4-0-0 in his NHL/Hurricanes regular-season career. He is the first goaltender in franchise history, 20th netminder in NHL history and the seventh NHL goaltender in the last 10 seasons (2013-present) to win each of his first four regular-season appearances. Only six goalies have started their careers 5-0-0 since the turn of the century: Antero Nittymaki (PHI, 2004-05), Nolan Schaefer (SJS, 2006), Martin Jones (LAK, 2013), Andersen (ANA, 2013), Charlie Lindgren (MTL, 2016-17) and Spencer Knight (FLA, 2021).

BURNIN’ UP
Brent Burns scored his first power-play goal of the season against the Oilers on Thursday, and he has now tallied seven points (1g, 6a) on the man-advantage this season, tied with Andrei Svechnikov (3g, 4a) for the team high. He ranks third in power-play points among all NHL defensemen in 2022-23, trailing only Cale Makar (COL, 1-8—9) and Rasmus Dahlin (BUF, 4-4—8). The Hurricanes have scored a power-play goal in five of their last seven games (10/31-11/10: 5 PPG), with tallies from four different skaters over that span (Stefan Noesen: 2, Sebastian Aho: 1, Burns: 1, Martin Necas: 1).

HERE TO ASSIST
Jaccob Slavin his third assist of the season vs. EDM (11/10), ending a nine-game scoring drought (10/22-11/9). Slavin has now earned 211 points (36g, 175a) in his NHL/Hurricanes career and needs just one more assist to tie Glen Wesley (1994-08: 176) for the second-most assists by any defenseman in franchise history.
