Sebastian Aho (1g, 1a), Stefan Noesen (2a) and Derek Stepan (2g) recorded two points, and Martin Necas scored a power-play goal to force overtime before Andrei Svechnikov scored the only goal in the shootout. — Stefan Noesen tallied 43 points (22g, 21a) in 145 NHL games with New Jersey from 2017-19. He also played four postseason games with the Devils in 2018, with his only playoff goal standing as the winner in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference First Round vs. TBL.

— Brett Pesce is a native of Tarrytown, N.Y., about 40 miles northeast of Newark. He played youth hockey with the North Jersey Avalanche and spent one season with the EJHL’s New Jersey Hitmen in 2011-12.

— Paul Stastny’s father, Peter, posted 173 points (64g, 109a) in 217 games with the Devils from 1990-93.

— Dougie Hamilton registered 121 points (42g, 79a) in 184 NHL games with Carolina from 2018-21 and added 14 points (6g, 8a) in 31 playoff games with the Hurricanes. He was acquired from CGY along with Micheal Ferland and Adam Fox in exchange for Noah Hanifin and Elias Lindholm on 6/23/18.

ROUND TWO
With the sixth series victory of his head coaching tenure against the Islanders in the First Round, Rod Brind’Amour joined Pat Burns (MTL/TOR, 6 from 1989-94) and Toe Blake (MTL, 5 from 1956-60) as just the third head coach in NHL history to lead his team to a playoff series victory in each of his first five seasons in charge. Brind’Amour is also one of just three active coaches to win six or more series in his first five seasons, alongside Mike Sullivan (BOS/PIT, 2004-18: 9) and Second Round opponent Lindy Ruff (BUF, 1998-02: 6). The Hurricanes are the only NHL team with a series victory in each of the last five postseasons (2019-23), and they have won a best-of-seven series in three straight years (2021-23), marking the longest such streak in franchise history.

EXTRA CREDIT
Carolina defeated New York in overtime in Games 2 and 6 of the First Round, improving to 29-17 in playoff overtime contests. The Whalers/Hurricanes’ .630 all-time win percentage in those contests is now the highest of any NHL franchise (min. 3 GP), surpassing the Islanders (40-24: .625), and they have won six straight playoff overtime games dating back to the 2019 Eastern Conference Second Round. Carolina is just the 15th team in NHL history to win six or more consecutive postseason overtime games (spanning multiple campaigns), and the first to accomplish the feat since TBL from 5/22/16-8/31/20 (7). With Paul Stastny clinching the series exactly 6:00 into overtime in Game 6, each of Carolina’s last seven postseason overtime goals have also come in the opening six minutes of the extra frame (also Jesper Fast, 2023 ECFR G2 vs. NYI: 5:03; Ian Cole, 2022 ECSR G1 vs. NYR: 3:12; Jordan Staal, 2021 CDSR G3 at TBL: 5:57; Sebastian Aho, 2021 CDFR G6 at NSH: 1:06; Jordan Staal, 2021 CDFR G5 vs. NSH: 2:03; Jordan Staal, 2019 ECSR G1 at NYI: 4:04), and the Hurricanes are just the second team in NHL history to accomplish that feat (ANA, 5/8/13-5/3/17: 7)
