Texas Rangers acivate RHP Ian Kennedy from 10-day injured list, option LHP Hyeon-Jong Yang to Round Rock

Kennedy leads A.L. in save percentage

Houston, Texas – The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has activated right-handed pitcher Ian Kennedy from the 10-day Injured List. Kennedy (#31) will be active for tonight’s game in Houston.

To make room on the active roster, left-handed pitcher Hyeon-jong Yang has been optioned to Triple-A Round Rock.

Kennedy was placed on the IL on June 9, retroactive to June 6, with a left hamstring strain and today is the first day he was eligible to be activated. He has no record with 12 saves and a 2.53 ERA (6 ER/21.1 IP) over 21 relief appearances with the Rangers this season. He leads all qualifying American League closers in save percentage at 92.3% (12-13) and is fourth in the A.L. in saves.

Yang is 0-3 with a 5.59 ERA in eight games/four starts since his contract was selected from the Alternate Training Site on April 26.

Following today’s transactions, the Rangers remain at the 40-man limit on the club’s Major League roster, along with eight players on the 60-day Injured List.

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers selected the contract of outfielder Steven Souza Jr. and designated right-handed pitcher Nate Jones for assignment.

Souza Jr., 32, appeared in 21 games for Triple-A Oklahoma City, batting .284 (19-for-67) with six homers and 16 RBI. He last appeared in a Major League game last season for the Chicago Cubs, batting .148 with two doubles, one homer and five RBI. He has spent parts of six seasons in the Major Leagues, slashing .232/.322/.416 with 71 homers and 203 RBI in 482 games. He had a career year in 2017 for the Rays, amassing 30 homers and driving in 78 in a career-best 148 games. He signed with the Dodgers as a minor league free agent on April 12.

Jones, 35, was signed by the Dodgers as a minor league free agent on May 14 and appeared in eight games for the Dodgers, going 0-0 with a 8.31 ERA (8 ER/8.2 IP) and seven strikeouts. The 10-year Major League veteran began the season with Atlanta, appearing in 12 games, posting an 0-2 record with a 3.48 ERA (6 ER/10.1 IP) and seven strikeouts. In his 10-year career with Chicago (2012-2019), Cincinnati (2020) and Atlanta (2021), he is a combined 22-16 with nine saves and a 3.45 ERA (126 ER/329.0 IP). He was originally drafted by the White Sox in the fifth round of the 2007 First Year Player Draft out of Northern Kentucky University.

Nahir Albright to Take on Jeremy Hill in Main Event; “Crossroads” Weekend also to feature another Massive Fight Card on Saturday, July 24th to be announced this Week

 

PHILADELPHIA  – The recently announced June 25th fight RDR Promotions fight card at the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia will be moved to Friday July 23rd. This will set p one of the biggest weekend in recent Philadelphia boxing history as RDR Promotions will present “Crossroads” fight weekend with two huge nights of boxing on Friday, July 23rd and Saturday, July 24th (Card to be announced this week).

 

Tickets Bought from Fighters, must be returned to the Point of Purchase for a refund. Those tickets WILL NOT be honored on July 23rd; Tickets Bought at the 2300 Arena WILL BE honored.

 

In the main event on July 23rd, will be a “cant miss” eight-round lightweight bout between Nahir Albright and Jeremy Hill.

 

Albright of Sicklerville, New Jersey has a record of 12-1 with six knockouts.

 

The 25 year-old Albright has been streaking as he stopped his last four opponents which includes early wins over Dante Cox (6-1) and his fight when he stopped former world title challenger Cosme Rivera in eight-rounds on May 28th in Rivera’s home country of Mexico. Albright also has wins over Danny Murray (1-0), Glenford Nickey (4-1-1) and Roy McGill (6-1-1).

 

Hill of New Orleans has a record of 15-1 with 10 knockouts.

 

Hiil, 28 years-old is a three-year pro who has wins over Leshawn Alcoks (1-0), Xavier Wilson (11-1-1) and Travis Castellon (16-3-1). Hill is coming of of a fourth round stoppage over Deivi Julio on May 15th in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

 

Also taking part in an eight-round bout will be Derrick Whitley Jr. taking on an opponent to be named in a welterweight bout.

 

Whitley of Springfield, MA is 6-1-1 and is a four-year professional. He is coming of a no-contest against Jermaine Corley, as Whitley suffered a cut before the fourth round.

 

Donald “No Love” Smith (12-1, 8 KOs) of Philadelphia will take on an opponent to be named in a eight-round featherweight bout.

 

In a six-round heavyweight tilt, Garrett Wilson (18-17-1, 8 KOs) of Philadelphia fights Joel Caudle (8-5-2, 5 KOs) of Raleigh, NC.

 

In four-round Bouts:

 

Ryan Umberger (4-0, 4 KOs) of Bensalem, PA takes on Ryan Schwartzberg (0-1-1) in a junior middleweight fight.

 

Afunwa King (3-1, 1 KO) of Bronx, NY takes on Clarence Whitehead (0-2 of Philadelphia in a light heavyweight fight.

 

Isaiah Johnson (1-0, 1 KO) of Philadelphia fights Damien Robinson (1-0, 1 KO) of North Carolina in a super lightweight contest.

 

Rashan Adams of Philadelphia makes his pro debut against an opponent to be named in a junior lightweight bout.

 

Muhsin Cason (7-0, 4 KOs) of Las Vegas will see action in a cruiserweight bout.

Washington Nationals select the contract of Justin Miller

The Washington Nationals selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Justin Miller and designated right-handed pitcher Rogelio Armenteros for assignment on Tuesday. Additionally, the Nationals placed right-handed pitcher Max Scherzer on the 10-day Injured List (retroactive to June 12) with groin inflammation. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcements.

 

Miller, 34, joins the Nationals after going 1-0 with five saves, a 0.55 ERA (1 ER/16.1 IP) and 29 strikeouts in 13 outings with Triple-A Rochester. He’s allowed nine hits (.161 opp. AVG) and issued four walks along the way. He allowed the lone earned run in his second outing of the season and since that point, has tossed 13.1 scoreless innings across 11 appearances.

 

Miller spent parts of two seasons (2018-19) in Washington’s bullpen. He went 8-1 with a 3.71 ERA and 71 strikeouts in 68 appearances (68.0 IP). All told, he’s appeared in 150 Major League games, posting a 4.43 ERA across five seasons with Detroit (2014), Colorado (2015-16) and Washington (2018-19).

 

Armenteros, 26, went 0-4 with a 5.83 ERA in seven starts for Triple-A Rochester.

 

Scherzer, 36, is 5-4 with a 2.21 ERA and 104 strikeouts in 13 starts for Washington this season.

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Oakland A’s have exercised the Club option on manager Bob Melvin’s contract for the 2022 season, the club announced today.

Melvin has compiled an 808-715 (.531) record in 10-plus seasons since being named interim manager on June 9, 2011. Earlier this season, the Bay Area native passed Tony La Russa for most wins in Oakland A’s history and became the 35th manager in MLB history to win his 1,300th game.

During his tenure with the A’s, he has led the team to six postseason appearances and three AL West Division titles. In 2013 he became the first manager to lead the A’s to consecutive division titles since La Russa won three straight from 1988-90.

Melvin has won Manager of the Year three times (Arizona, 2007; Oakland, 2012 & 2018). He is the sixth manager to win the award in both leagues and just the eighth to win it three or more times. He and La Russa are the only men to accomplish this feat in an Oakland uniform. In his career, Melvin is 1301-1223 (.515) in 18 seasons with Seattle (2003-04), Arizona (2005-09), and Oakland (2011-present).

He is the 30th manager in franchise history and the 18th in Oakland history.

* Defensemen continued to shine for the Golden Knights as they won their fifth straight game and grabbed a 1-0 series lead.

* The Islanders, who dropped the first two games against the Lightning in the 2020 Conference Finals, will look to take a 2-0 series lead over Tampa Bay in the Stanley Cup Semifinals.
 
GOLDEN KNIGHTS EXTEND WINNING STREAK, SNAP CANADIENS’ SEVEN-GAME RUN
Defensemen Shea Theodore (1-1—2), Alec Martinez and Nick Holden accounted for three of Vegas’ four goals as the Golden Knights improved to 5-0 in their last five contests and handed the Canadiens their first loss since Game 4 of the First Round, ending a seven-game winning streak. The Golden Knights recorded five consecutive victories within a postseason for the fourth time since their inaugural season.

* Vegas became the second team to have three different defensemen score at least one goal in a game taking place during the Conference Finals/Semifinals. The Golden Knights joined the Penguins in Game 5 of the 1991 Prince of Wales Conference Final (Larry Murphy, Paul Stanton & Ulf Samuelsson).

* Theodore (12-33—45 in 61 GP) scored his 12th playoff goal since joining Vegas in 2017-18, which leads NHL defensemen over that span. He also leapfrogged reigning Conn Smythe Trophy winner Victor Hedman (11-33—44 in 56 GP) for the most postseason points among all blueliners since 2018.

* Golden Knights defensemen have combined for nine goals, 28 assists and 37 points in the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs, tops among all teams for each category. Theodore became the sixth Vegas defenseman with at least one goal this postseason.

RINNE AWARDED KING CLANCY MEMORIAL TROPHY
Predators goaltender Pekka Rinne was the 2020-21 recipient of the King Clancy Memorial Trophy, awarded for “leadership on and off the ice and who has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution to his community.” Click here to read more on the efforts of Rinne, who will receive a $25,000 donation from the National Hockey League Foundation to benefit a charity or charities of his choice.

* The 2020-21 recipient of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy will be revealed tonight.

ISLANDERS LOOK TO HEAD HOME WITH 2-0 SERIES LEAD AGAINST LIGHTNING
Game 2 between New York and Tampa Bay goes tonight, with the Islanders aiming to extend their winning streak to five contests and return to Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum with a 2-0 lead in the Stanley Cup Semifinals.

* New York has earned five or more consecutive victories in a postseason six times in franchise history. The most-recent instance was during the 1983 Stanley Cup Playoffs, when the Islanders closed out the Conference Finals with an 8-4 win over the Bruins and then swept the Oilers in the Final to claim their fourth straight championship.
* The Lightning have not suffered consecutive postseason losses since the 2019 First Round, when they were swept by the Blue Jackets. Tampa Bay owns a playoff record of 11-0 in the contest following a loss dating to Game 4 of that series, which is tied for the longest such run in NHL history with Montreal from 1985 to 1986.

Nevada to play in 2021 Crossover Classic at Sanford Pentagon

RENO, Nev. – Nevada will make a non-conference trip to South Dakota this fall, as the Pack will be one of four teams competing in the 2021 Crossover Classic, a round-robin event at the Sanford Pentagon, from Nov. 22-24.

 

The field for the 2021 event in Sioux Falls, S.D., features Washington, George Mason, and South Dakota State. The four teams have a combined 37 NCAA Tournament appearances and 10 trips to the Sweet 16.

 

“We are very excited to be part of this outstanding field of teams in the 2021 Crossover Classic,” said Nevada men’s basketball head coach Steve Alford. “This event is one of the most competitive of the preseason and is well-supported by the local community. Our team looks forward to getting in front of fans again, as well as preparing ourselves for Mountain West play.”

 

On-sale date for tickets, television information and game times will be announced later.
