Boston places right-handed pitcher Matt Barnes on COVID-19 related injured list

 

BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox today returned infielder/outfielder Marwin Gonzalez from his injury rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester and reinstated him from the 10-day injured list. The Red Sox also placed right-handed pitcher Matt Barnes on the COVID-19 Related Injured List.

 

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

 

Gonzalez, 32, was placed on the injured list on July 16 (retroactive to July 13) with a right hamstring strain. He made one start at first base and one at second base for Worcester, going 2-for-6 with one home run and one walk. Gonzalez has played in 70 games with the Red Sox this season, making 26 starts at second base, 11 at first base, nine at shortstop, seven in left field, six at third base, and two in right field. The switch-hitter has batted .205 (45-for-219) with two home runs and a .582 OPS.

 

Barnes, 31, has appeared in 43 games with the Red Sox this season, going 5-2 with 23 saves, a 2.30 ERA (11 ER/43.0 IP), a 0.81 WHIP, a .164 opponent batting average, 66 strikeouts, and 11 walks. On July 11, Barnes agreed to a two-year contract extension that spans the 2022-23 seasons, with a club option for 2024. Named an All-Star for the first time in his career in 2021, the right-hander ranks seventh on the Red Sox’ all-time list of games pitched (368).

Dodgers recall OF Zach Reks

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled outfielder Zach Reks and optioned right-handed pitcher Yefry Ramírez.

 

Reks, 27, will be recalled for the third time in his career and has appeared in six games for the Dodgers this season. He has spent the majority of the season in Oklahoma City, batting .312 (62-for-199) with 12 homers and 38 RBI in 53 games. In 309 career minor league games, he has batted a combined .303 (334-for-1107) with 47 homers and 183 RBI. The Chicago, IL native was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 10th round of the 2017 First Year Player Draft out of the University of Kentucky.

 

Ramírez, 27, made his Dodgers debut Sunday, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings with two strikeouts. He is now 1-10 with a 6.19 ERA (63 ER/91.2 IP) and 91 strikeouts in 31 games (13 starts) in his Major League career spanning three seasons and stops in Baltimore (2018-19), Pittsburgh (2019) and Los Angeles (2021). In his minor league career, he is 43-39 with a 3.75 ERA (278 ER/667.1 IP) and 679 strikeouts in 152 career games. He signed with the Dodgers as a minor league free agent on March 25.

Washington Nationals recall Riley Adams, select contract of Javy Guerra

The Washington Nationals recalled catcher Riley Adams and selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Javy Guerra from Triple-A Rochester on Tuesday. Additionally, the Nationals placed catcher René Rivera on the 10-day Injured List (retroactive to Aug. 2) with a right elbow contusion and optioned right-handed pitcher Wander Suero to Triple-A Rochester. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcements.

 

Adams, 25, was acquired by the Washington Nationals from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for left-handed pitcher Brad Hand on July 29. He appeared in one game with Triple-A Rochester, going 0-for-3 with two walks on July 30 vs. Lehigh Valley. He became the No. 13 prospect in Washington’s Minor League system according to MLBPipeline.com following the trade.

 

Prior to the trade, Adams was considered the best power hitter in Toronto’s Minor League system according to Baseball America. He joined the Nationals organization after hitting .239 with six doubles, one triple, seven homers, 17 RBI, 16 walks and 20 runs scored in 35 games for Triple-A East Buffalo.

 

Adams made his Major League debut on June 8 at Chicago (AL), going 1-for-3 with a double. He appeared in 12 games with the Blue Jays across two Major League stints. Adams went 3-for-28 (.107) with two doubles, two walks and two runs scored. He spent the 2020 season at Toronto’s Alternate Training Site.

 

The 6-foot-4, 246-pound righty has hit .262 with a .363 on-base percentage and a .419 slugging percentage in 286 games across four professional seasons (2017-21). He’s recorded 66 doubles, five triples, 28 home runs, 146 RBI, 130 walks, eight stolen bases and 153 runs scored. He was a Florida State League All-Star in 2018 and 2019 and a Northwest League All-Star in 2017.

 

Guerra, 35, returns to the active roster after missing the first portion of the season with right elbow soreness. He posted a 1.35 ERA (1 ER/6.2 IP) across six Minor League outings. Guerra spent the 2019 and 2020 seasons with Washington, going 3-1 with a 4.67 ERA in 54 appearances out of the bullpen.

 

Rivera, 38, has appeared in four games for the Nationals this season, hitting .214 (3-for-14) with two runs scored.

 

Suero, 29, is 2-2 with a 5.67 ERA in 37 games out of Washington’s bullpen this season.

CHICAGO – Prior to tonight’s series opener vs. Kansas City, the Chicago White Sox recalled right-handed pitcher Matt Foster from Class AAA Charlotte.

 

Foster, 26, is 2-1 with 6.04 ERA (19 ER/28.1 IP), one save and 33 strikeouts in 27 games over two stints with the White Sox this season. He made the Opening Day roster before being optioned to Charlotte on July 16, and also served as the 27th player for a doubleheader on July 19 vs. Minnesota.

 

Foster made six appearances with the Knights, going 0-1 with a 1.42 ERA (1 ER/6.1 IP) and 11 strikeouts.

Pirates claim LHP Anthony Banda off waivers from Mets

The Pirates have claimed LHP Anthony Banda off waivers from the New York Mets.

 

The 27-year-old Banda (turns 28 on August 10) began the 2021 season in the San Francisco organization with Triple-A Sacramento before being acquired by the Mets in exchange for infielder Will Toffey on 7/2. He made five relief appearances with New York this season, picking up a victory in his first appearance on 7/19 at Cincinnati. He was designated for assignment on Saturday (7/31).

 

Originally selected by Milwaukee in the 10th round of the 2012 First-Year-Player Draft, Banda was traded to Arizona on 7/31/14 and made his Major League debut with the Diamondbacks in 2017. He also spent parts of three seasons (2018-2020) with Tampa Bay after being acquired by the Rays as part of a three-team deal on 2/2/18.

 

In 23 big league games (five starts), Banda has posted a 5-3 record, one save and a 6.14 ERA (58.2ip/40er).

Infielder made Major League debut with Oakland earlier this season

 

HOUSTON, TX – The Houston Astros have claimed IF Jacob Wilson off of waivers from the Oakland A’s. The announcement was made by Astros General Manager James Click.

 

Wilson, 31, has spent the majority of his 2021 season at Triple A Las Vegas, hitting .288 (53×184) with 17 doubles, 14 homers and 46 RBI, while posting a 1.016 OPS (.385 OBP / .630 SLG) in 49 games. He earned his first call-up to the Major Leagues in July and appeared in six games for the A’s, going 1×7, before being designated for assignment on Friday. Wilson has appeared in 802 career minor league games, over the span of 10 years, spending time with the Cardinals (2012-17), Nationals (2018-19) and A’s (2021) organizations. Wilson has been optioned to Triple A Sugar Land.

 

To make room for Wilson on the Astros 40-man roster, the club transferred RHP Tyler Ivey to the Major League 60-day Injured List.

Mets claim RHP Jake Reed

FLUSHING, N.Y., – The New York Mets today announced the club has claimed RHP Jake Reed off waivers from Tampa Bay. He will report to Miami to be part of New York’s taxi squad.

 

Reed, 28, has appeared in six games, one start with the Los Angeles Dodgers this year. He has allowed five hits, two earned runs, walked two and struck out five over 5.1 innings. He began the year in the Angels organization, before signing with the Dodgers on June 4. Reed was designated for assignment and claimed by Tampa Bay on July 25. He was designated by the Rays on July 30.

 

In 18 minor league games this season, the 6-2, 195-pounder has struck out 28 in 22.1 innings, earned one save with a 5.24 ERA. Overall, he is 19-14 with 22 saves, 360 strikeouts and a 3.72 ERA (142 earned runs/344.0 innings) in 234 minor league games.
